At scope height of 1.5 inch
a projectile with BC at about 0.320 traveling at just about 1800 fps
would be dead on at 25 yards
0.78 in high at 50
0.79 at 75
and dead on at 100

found out using Point Blank < thanks again DallanC

This must be one of those old wise tails or urban legends !!! (or maybe stupidity for some)

I’ve seen guys wasting ammo more than just a few times trying to perfectly center the bull at 25 yards.
The funny part is when they move out to 100 yards and don’t hit the bull they go back to 25 yards. wtf
I asked a guy one day why he didn’t just sight in at 100 yards...............I was the stupid one that day !!! Laughing

I have heard this and have seen it. But I was also told that it depended on the rifle and the shooter as to whether it would work. Technically it is correct.

Just this past weekend we sighted in four rifles; two ARs in .223, a Rem 700 in .260 and a Marlin 1895 .45-70. We started at 25 yds and got them close, then moved the target out to 100 yards. The first three were a few inches high and the .45-70 was a few inches low. We tweaked from there.

Pumpkinslinger seems to have the idea the way I always understood it. You can't depend on it being "right on" at 100 when sighted for 25, but you will be on the target. I think this all started before the various types of boresighters became common. It is a quick way (and less costly) to make sure you are at least on paper at 100 yards without a lot of shoot and guess. Fine tuning comes then. Of course with boresighters a person can now pre-sight and be on paper at 100 yards (unless something is really wrong).

Roughly speaking yes. but like Mike said it will save you some ammo and get you on paper if you have never zeroed the weapon.

After I had a 100 yard zero, I used Point Blank to calculate my sight settings for my service rifle competition gun for 200-300 and 600 yards. and was in the black but not the X-ring at all distances. You have to shoot it at the distance you intend to use to do the fine tuning. Plus environmental factors will cause different point of impact so you have ot know the weapon. If it is hot or cold, humid or dry, sea level or mountains, flat or hills, sunny or cloudy will all change your zeros' slightly.

If you shoot a 308 with open sights 1 in low at 25 yrds you will be on at 200 yrds You will be 2-3 ins high at 100 yrds because because the round travels in an arch. It works the same with a scope you have to fined how low to hit at 25 yrds. what you want is an arch that rises no more 4 ins out to your zero.
I have a 30-06 with a scope it is zeroed for 250 yrds at 25 yrds it is 1/2 in low at 100 it is 4 ins high. all I have to do is aim dead on and I'm in the 6 in killing zone of a white tail

As for the bore sighting... The one time someone did that for me (I bought a scope and the shop offered to mount and bore sight it for free) I found that my shots were about 1 foot right and 1 foot low at 100 yards. Luckily I had a BIG new piece of cardboard as a target backer. Maybe the guy did something wrong but I wasn't overly impressed. Let me be the first to say that this is only one experience, I haven't used a bore sighter before or since because I don't have one.

The fastest way I found to sight in a rifle is to first sight it in on paper at 25 yds. Remember that 1/4 " off at 25 is at least an 1" off at 100. Typically a varmint/big game rifle that hits POA at 25 will be "on paper" at 100. Make minor corrections and all will be good.

Paid twice to have someone bore sight a scope, neither time was even close !!!

Took a 3 foot by 3 foot piece of cardboard to the range one day to sight in a scope, when I started down range another guy there seemed to think it was the funniest thing he ever saw. When I got back from hanging it at 100 yards he was still laughing and offered his assistance and suggested I start at 25 yards.
First shot on the cardboard way off the intended target. Second shot just off the bull. Third, right in the 1 inch bull.
I just looked up smiled (knowing he had been watching through his spotting scope) and thanked him for his offer and let him know I wasn’t going to need his help.

The point of any boresighter is to get you on paper so that you can make fine adjustments to suit your shooting style and distances. They should never be used as the only adjustment tool...they just aren't that accurate. Properly used, they will get you somewhere on a decent sized target. After that the rest is up to you. Because the accuracy of a boresighter depends on the barrel stud being tightened exactly the same each time, even with care mine seldom gives repeatable settings, but it is always at least close enough to allow me to finish the job at my chosen zero.
