Do ya'll get your best groups from a sand bag or a bipod?

I agree with 221. Sandbags (actually I used bags filled with ground corn-cob or kitty litter for a much softer and forgiving surface) can definitely cause as many problems as they can solve.

Bipods can also cause problems due to the vibration of the various springs associated with them. I had a rifle that refused to group with a bipod, but worked fine from bags. On a whim, I wrapped the springs with pipe-cleaners to help dampen the vibration and it settled down. This was the only rifle that I have ever had that type of problem with, but it might pop up for someone else.

Sorry about that, I pulled mine to edit.

My opinion is that both serve the job well for the average shooter.
But !!! There are some important points you need to understand about bi-pods.

Bi-pods offer great stability because of their wide stance but can cause flyers due to hard surface contact.
When a gun recoils it’s muzzle end is forced downward first then raises. ( whiplash type of effect )Consistency in how you hold the gun is very critical. Some guys use a forward push to preload some tension on the legs that will help. Once again consistency plays a big role on that also.
My 7MM08 Remington Model 7 jumps off the bench with a bi-pod and I can’t shoot it as consistently. POI also raises 1”-1 ½”

I do prefer the sandbag because of how it absorbs recoil and aides in consistency. To hard of a sandbag can have the same results as a bi-pod though.
I’m actually in the process of designing a sandbag that will set on a adjustable front rest. It will be longer and deeper than the traditional type front bags. I’m hoping that the channel design will help with tracking and give it more stability.

I prefer sand bags and I like real sand in them there heavier but I think the stock "settles" in a little better (imo)

I use sandbags. I've seen the bounce from a bipod happen too, when it was used on a hard surface. This topic would make for an interesting experiment... If I get the chance this week I'll try a 10 shot group from sandbags and then stick on the Harris bipod and try another 10.

Sandbags. I have been using them forever and they work well. All the best...

I use a lead sled and shot bags or just shot bags. I like the table or bench to be solid by the weight of the bags. I usually use 75# of shot. I also use a 3 ring binder large side out as a sloped brace for my right elbow. I adjust the 3 ring binder until the slope matches the natural position of the elbow.
Best,
Ed

When using a bipod, I always "rock" it back off the stops (or forward with a FAL) & get more consistent results.
Having said that; a proper rest & rear bag is always better when working up a load for accuracy, though I'll then check the selected load off the 'pod for a "real world" test - no bags & fancy rests when out bashing bunnies or deer stalking.

Thank ya'll for the input, I have never owned a bipod.I shoot off of a caldwell x bag (the long one with the trench in the middle) I lay my forearm across of it sideways and set my butt stock on an owl eared bag.I was just weighing on whether to spend money on a bipod or not.I think I will let someone else keep them. Thanks again
