I went rabbit hunting Saturday, woke up, threw on my pants, jacket, grabbed my Cooey & hunting knife and threw a handful of 22LR rounds in my pocket and my 2 magazines for the rifle and well .... I like it more then deer hunting.
Maybe its cause I got the excuse to move around while rabbit hunting and everyone I know wants to still hunt deer. But running around in the fields and bush patches was much better then still hunting deer any day. Even if I did not manage to see a single one when I was out.

Jackrabbits and/or cotton tails depending what showed up, both are in the same area, and I found tracks of both, I am just not as good as a dog when it comes to sniffing them out yet.

Vince,
A jackrabbit is about 2 to 4 times larger than a cottontail (at least down here). The cotton tail lives in prickly pear cactus and brush thickets; jackrabbits tend to live in open grassy areas where they can run.
Both are edible, however, most people prefer cottontails. The old timers (when I was a kid) always told me that jackrabbits almost always had intestinal worm and other parasites, so I took them for their word.

+1 with vince's advice.
its better to sit and watch them.
them rabbits know to freeze and act like a log.
With their camouflage you may just walk pass them.
On the other hand, if you are still , they will get back to be active.. then BANG!!

My rabbits must be real dumb. They just sit and watch me wander around the yard doing my thing and pretty much ignore me...The only time they skedaddle is when my barn cat shows up...

Enough snow on the ground I could track there walking about, find the pile of trees they were going in and out of, shake it up, but none were in there, so went to the next pile.

Mine must be real smart.....

Joe |
We had cottontail cooked on the rotisserie (basted with butter and hot sauce) as part of our annual "wild game" New Years Eve dinner this year. I never have leftovers when I cook 'em that way.....

Bunny bashing is fun.
We use .22rf subsonics & suppressors & see how many we can get before the rest spook - sometimes more than 50.
It's actually a legal requirement for landowners in the UK to control/eradicate rabbits on their land, so we get plenty of opportunities.

Mike and Vince,
What kinda rabbits do you guys have in your areas?
Are they edible? or just used for target practice?
Around here they're actually coveted for the meat, even though they are plentiful (cotontails that is). They can be difficult to hunt, especially in areas where groundhogs are abundant, since the rabbits will usually use a GH hole as a hiding place (picture Bugs Bunny diving into a hole, only he didn't actually dig it).
