How to Measure magnification
How can I see how strong a magnifying glass is?

I bought this magnifying glass www.liangdianup.com/in...189901.htm and I want

to know how to test it to see how strong it is. I hear a lot of people talk about

magnifying and how strong the magnification is, but I would like to know the true

magnification of my magnifying glass. I have a few of them and some seem stronger then

others. How can I rate these? How can I pin a correct number on mine? How do the companies

that make these come up with these numbers.

Welcome Green,

When I was a kid, I used to take my Granddad's magnifying glasses, and rate how good they were, by how fast it would smoke an ant on Mom and Dad's porch.

Other than that, I can't help you much with your question.

Stick around for a while, and I'm sure that some of the much brighter guys around here [it doesn't take much to be brighter than me, so don't get your hopes up too much], can help you.

Eric Nuts Nuts Nuts

Hey Guys--I wouldn't answer this question, because I have no idea how to rate them, but this gives me 968 posts, and I would like to hit 1000 before the turn of the year.

Dallan--If you just want to punch in 1000 posts for me, it would save everybody having to read stuff like I have just written, just for one more cheap post.

Usually magnification of a magnifying glass is in term of how many times larger an object appeared while it was placed on the FOCAL length of the glass.

Ie. a 1mm object will look like 5mm when looked through a 5x magnifying glass while it is placed on the glass's focal length.

A good magnifying glass would have its magnifying power stated and would magnify the same amount throughout the width of the glass no matter where you look at them.

Cheap glass only magnify clear images at the center and blurred around the edges.

I am not sure why Hello green post this topic, but I have a feeling he is advertising the site in a sneaky way..
Please prove me wrong..

I'll bet that you are right on the advertising gelandangan.

It went way over my head when I read it.

Glad that I gave a smart a** answer anyway.

Gelan, I think you might be right about the advertising, I believe we've been directed to that site before.

It's a spambot post.

Do a Google search of its username followed by +profile & you'll see how many forums it joined recently & posted the same thing.

Three identical posts in this forum: www.advancedphysics.or...hid=319481

I see that Hellogreen was banned from some web sites.

Yep, I noticed that I was approaching 1000 posts too! Maybe we should start some contentious thread so we can post a lot... Wink

Arguing with each other? Seems rather difficult considering I have never seen a argument last more then 5-6 posts here. Wink
