Got asked a question that I'm not sure of the answer!
Can a 3.5in 870 be used to shoot slugs? without changing the barrel to a rifled slug barrel?
I think the smooth barrel would adversly affect the accuracy. Am I wrong or is there any problems using the smooth barrel?
One of you guys surely has tested this in the past, I would like to know the outcome of the testing.
What slug brand did you use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

It is possible to shoot rifled or Foster slugs through a smoothbore shotgun barrel. An open choke like improved cylinder or modified is recommended. Accuracy will vary and a session at the range will determine what slugs work best. Hope this helps. All the best...

If I read what you are saying you want to use a bird barrel for slugs and not a rilfed slug barrel? or are you wanting to use a smooth slug barrel with rifle sights or a scope? To both scenarios the answer is absolutely you can, but you will not match the range accuracy a rifled barrel and sabots has. Like Gil said your results will vary with the barrel and choke you use with different slugs. No magic bullets- just try a few different brands. My sons 870 with improved choke loves the Brenneke KO slugs and is minute of whitetail out about 70 yards. Same gun cant hit the broad side of a barn with the Winchester slugs. My buddies 870 does not like the Brennekes and he swears by the Remington Hi Speed Sluggers... you just have to take it out and try it.

If you are using a bird barrel your accuracy will be diminished if you have a barrel that has only one bead on it too. Smooth bore slug barrels with rifle sights and rem chokes are in the used parts on several auction sights for bargain prices sometimes. New they run about $150. It is a 1 minute change out.
