The idiots at the Minnesota DNR messed us up by having opening day next Saturday.
The DNR also made October 6th opening day for duck, instead of Sept. 28.
Our DNR has been messing with us duck hunters sense I was a kid.

Good luck Joe, and have a safe hunting season.

You have a big mess down there Vince.
You should move to Minnesota.

Ben was so upset about opening day for Geese, that he and his friends purchased Wisconsin licenses and went goose hunting this morning.
They filled out with 30 geese.

Pretty expensive geese for $100.00 for the license, but I would have gone with him if I had the money.

$3.33 per goose doesn't sound expensive to me. What is the average weight for a goose in your area? Even if it is as low as 3 pounds that's half the cost of chicken per pound here.

I'm with Paul on this one Eric....$3.33 is as cheap as chips mate....then of course you can't put a dollar figure on the sheer enjoyment of the hunt.

Nah, I reckon young Ben has had a nice cheap hunt...and you get to partake in the spoils mate. Roast Goose for Sunday dinner. Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

Most of the geese around here are greaters, so they will weigh anywhere between 8#-15#.

Ben brought home six geese, and I'm going to try a new recipe.
Mix up BBQ sauce, Teriyaki, Worcestershire, and crushed garlic.
I will cut the goose breasts into strips, and let sit for a couple of days, then BBQ them.

With all of the money that I spend during hunting season, plus my gun purchases this year, I figured that for my health and mental well being, it was better that I stay home with my lovely Wife and clean the laundry room on Saturday instead.

Because of what I did for her, she is happy, I'm happy and still in one piece, and this Saturday will be healthy enough to start my own slaughtering of Waterfowl. Very Happy Very Happy

Smart thinkin' buddy. There is something rather disconcerting about the thought of "She Who MUST Be Obeyed" shovin' her hand down ya throat, grabbin' ya backside and turnin' ya inside out. It would not be a pleasant feeling...or a good look either. "Eric guts" all over the place. Yuck Yuck Laughing

There will be other opportunities to get out and cap a few geese.

Cheers, Vince

The majority of the resident population here are Giants (wasn't long ago that Giants were the only resident birds). The early season was established in an attempt to control the resident bird population, since it's usually conducted 6 weeks before any migratory birds even consider moving through the area. With the Feds in control of the laws governing waterfowl harvests, and the resident bird population NOT being considered a part of "migratory" waterfowl harvests, we've experienced an explosion in nuisance bird flocks. So much so that the ODNR has eliminated Mandatory Reporting Zones (MRZ's), of which most of my hunting areas were a part. MRZ's required an additional $10 permit, and neccessitated a trip to the Wildlife Area HQ office to "check" each bird killed. It got to be so cumbersome that we often questioned whether it was worth the effort to kill 3 birds and drive 40 miles each way to have 'em checked. Still gotta wonder if Early Goose needs to start the first Monday of September and last only 2 weeks though, since it's usually to damned HOT to hunt here (it was 87 F here on Labor Day). Seems as though we might be able to start it a little later here, extend it by a week or more, and prolly do more to reduce the "nuisance" bird population, even if we hafta keep a 3 bird limit.

Sorry, just my rant......

Hey Hunter, does Ohio still have that no hunting on Sunday Law??
I lived and learned how to duck hunt in the Sandusky Marshes.
I can remember Dad always complaining about that "Damn Sunday Law"
It pushed the "Old Man" up to Minnesota when I was just a kid.
