I am not sure which cartridge you are talking about. Are you talking about the .17 Mach 2 ? Or the .17 HMR ? One is based on the the .22 LR case and the latter is based on the .22 WMR case.

torasperry don't know much bout the .17 mach11 but i own a .17HMR and its really good to shoot but the .17 does not buck the wind very well.
The rounds are quite frangeable and break up in the animal with very little pelt damage. The cost of the rounds are more expensive than the 22LR or 22Mag.
From the discription it sounds ok if you buy it you need to try all of 5 or 6 types of ammo to see which one it shoots best. My HMR shoots approx 1" groups a@ 100 using the whinchesters mounted with a banner 3x9x40 scope.

torasperry Ok the shorter of the two rounds is the Mach 11 based on the 22LR and the longer one is the HMR based on the 22Mag

phill21 knows his rimfires Very Happy

I have a Savage Mark II bolt action in 17 MACH 2. With little or no wind the rifle/ammo is very accurate out to 100 yards. Used within it's limits, I've found it to be very deadly on small game. During my first time out with the Savage I killed a called in coyote (50 feet, neck shot) but I would not recommend it as a coyote cartridge. Crows never know what hit them. wtf I’m going to try it on gray squirrels this fall, head shots only. Very Happy

17 MACH 2
22 Stinger rimfire case necked down to.17 caliber

17 HMR ( Hornady Magnum Rimfire)
22 mag. case necked down to .17 caliber

Edit: torasperry... I noticed you are in Tennessee.
I live in Roane County (40 miles west of Knoxville).

Thanks Yotehunter1,
I looked at the ballistics chart for MachII and it stays with the HMR past 100 yds, Also heard that different mfgrs carts shoot different in every rifle
CCI and Hornady both are supposed to do well in MachII rifles, What do you use? And what do you think about the price for the Savage, Grey stock,S/S with a 4 to 12 on top, I think it is a Nikon but I could be wrong.
Yea, I'm in West Tennessee and Love it, But you have a better area for Coyotes, In the Mountains, Right. Medina is at 455 amsl and it's flat and rolling area, lots of Cotton fields to hunt Yotes though.
Thanks for the info, Enjoy seeing what you say about the above....
All information is Welcomed

Bob,
Since there are so few companies that produce HM 2 ammo selection is fairly limited. I’ve tried every brand except Eley, which I can’t find locally. Hornady and CCI are what mine likes best (so far).
Savage makes some fine shooting rifles, both rimfire and center fire. I own several but I’m not familiar with the package you mentioned. My HM 2 is the varmint model with Accu-Trigger, blued steel, heavy target barrel, detachable magazine. It came with scope mounts but no scope.

I live in the Tennessee valley, within sight of the eastern rim of the Cumberland Plateau. From the valley floor, going west, elevation quickly rises from 735’ to aprox. 2,000’ above sea level. To the southeast, lies the Great Smokey Mountains. Yep, we do have a few little hills and hollows here.

As far as coyotes, they started showing up here in the early 70’s. Although some areas of west Tennessee hold larger coyote populations than we have here the critters have really gained a major foot hold in the past 20 years.

BTW< Check your Inbox (personal message).

Chet

Like my 17 HM2's. Have a 14" Contender pistol and a 23" Contender carbine. Both shoot about the same. The cartridge is good on small game out to about a 150 yds. About all I use it for is ground squirrels.
