Not convinced that "do away with the permit system all to gather and just carry..." as Bushy suggests is a good thing, in fact I think it would be a step backward. Its great for the law abiding citizens, but then there are no checks and balances on those that need to be "checked and balanced", ie criminals, mentally unstable people etc.

The permit system would most benefit from being revisited and made into a National Permit rather than a State Permit....and kept right away from the bureaucrats...although I'm damned if I know how you would do that.

One of the big gun gurus, I can't remember which, once said that we should just allow everyone to carry guns for the simple reason that there are more good guys than bad guys and eventually things would settle out.

Vince...There two states that have no CCW permits. everyone can carry concealed. Their view is just what Pumpkinslinger stated. Alaska is one and I can't remember the other one, but Vermont sticks in my mind. And there hasn't been shoot outs in the streets of either states.

Alaska allows carry without a license or permit as long as you are not a felon. I believe Vermont is the same. Alaska will issue a concealed carry license for reciprocity with other states, but for carry in state, none is needed. When I resided in PA I got my License to carry a firearm when I turned 21, carried every day after. I am now a police officer in Alaska and consider the biggest benefit of my profession not my retirement, insurance, or on job excitement, but the ability for law enforcement officers to carry off-duty nationwide under legislation in HR218. I think similar legislation should be passed for nationwide reciprocity for concealed carry license holders, just as one states drivers license is honored in all states.

The right to self-defense is a God given right, the government is just suppose to protect that right from being trampled on.
