Once again, the most often asked question is - what is a BARREL STUB???

And once again, here are a few pictures that explain the process....

First, we start with a factory H&R barrel.... (this same basic process is also applied to the T/C Contender, G-2 and Encore as well as a few others)....

This shows the front of the barrel after being cut back in a bandsaw to create the STUB....

This short section of barrel is what is referred to as a BARREL STUB....

Since I am doing two BARREL STUBS at a time, it allows me to be able to show a before and after at the same time. The STUB on the left is unmachined and the one on the right has already been bored and reamed to size....

This shows both barrel blanks along side the BARREL STUBS. Both STUBS have been cut back to 3.250"....

This shows one of the barrel blanks after chambering and cutting the rim counterbore. Both barrels are going to be chambered for a 375X444 Improved....

More pictures to follow....

....This shows the barrel after being mated to the BARREL STUB....

These next two pictures show the extractor slot after being cut....

Both the barrel and base were modified to to accept the larger 8-40 screws....

More pictures to follow....

The 375X444 Improved is now complete and here are the final pictures of this BARREL STUBBED RIFLE...

This shows the forend hanger that I made and installed onto the barrel for attaching the forend....

This shows the forend after the pillar and epoxy bedding was completed and allowed to fully cure....

These show the rifle after completion....

This is the round I chambered this rifle for....

Well, I hope you like the pictures and what I did to this H&R....

Shocked

Thank you Deer Sniper for the pictures...
Great works!! as usual!!

Now after I wipe all the goo off my keeboard's plastic cover questions..

1. How do you mate the stub with the new barrel? welded, threaded ???
2. Would the jointing go loose after some shots?
3. What happened to the engraved writings on the side of the stubs? do you polish it off?
4. How do you attach the fore end hanger to the barrel?

Thank you Sir, I appreciate it....

1 - PATENTED process / build...

2 - NO...

3 - The engravings are left as is...

4 - The forend hanger is attached to the barrel with two 8-40 screws...

Deer Sniper,
Do you think a break open shotgun has the strength to make a 257 Roberts out of? I have enough metal to cut 32 TPI ACME threads in the chamber area without any problem with the metals strength one the stub. It has to have a lug as large as the H&R.........
Thinking out loud is a good thing - it can keep you from doing something stupid.
Just asking for an opinion - not placing liability (that belongs to me)

PaulS,

it depends on the type of shotgun and how it is set up more than anything else. This is a .45acp. that I built from an N.E.F. 20 ga. barrel stub. I screwed the muzzle brake onto the barrel and machined it out with the rest of the barrel, screwed the barrel into the stub and then completed the rest of the gun...

I have never used an N.E.F. shotgun barrel for building astub gun around cartridges larger than the 30-30 Ackley Improved. I have done lot's of 22 K-Hornets and similar sized rounds but nothing like the 257 Roberts...

If a cartridge like the 257 Roberts was to be built from a shotgun barrel like the N.E.F., it should only be fired on a centerfire rifle receiver that is designed to handle high pressure rounds and NOT on a shotgun receiver....

Neat Build! Very Happy

Humm, cutting a step in the barrel blank and press fitting it would work, would work better if you froze the barrel blank first though with liquid nitrogen and gave it a even tighter fit.

That's some darn nice work Sniper.
Thanks for taking the time to take the pictures.
Beautiful pieces after you finished.

Deer sniper,
Your work is excellent. I am wondering if I can use the thrust (back thust) calculation to calculate whether the action can take the recoil. I am sure that the cut-down barrel (.809") will withstand the pressure. I roll the threads so there are reduced risks of stress fractures.

As far as interference fitting the two parts, it may hold but there are stresses induced with that kind of fit that may not be conducive to long life on a high pressure rifle. I would feel more comforable with pinning the barrel if I wasn't going to thread it.

Thanks PaulS.

I know some SKS's are pinned, never really thought much of it. Still I have another idea for inserting barrels into recievers etc for cheap manufacturing.

I'll send you the idea of mine once its ready to be shown to the world. Wink
