RCBS inertia type puller since I always worry about marring the bullet. I have even had to use it to pull bullets from .17 Remingtons upon occasion...but it sure isn't fun! Takes a lot of blows.
Like the use of earplugs, I just stuff a square of foam rubber into the bottom of mine. Saves the noses of the bullets, especially if they are heavy ones.

Vince...Next time you see him pull a bullet using the "plier" method. Take a set of dial calipers and measure the bullet circumference in at least two places. I bet the bullet is squished a bit...And you are right...If you are pulling hunting or FMJ bullets you don't need the padding in the bottom of the hammer.

You guys have to pull bullets?
What the heck for..??
It can be argued that the tip condition has little to no effect on "accuracy", and the bullet base is where the concern rests........
An ear plug is the tool for the job if concerned about tips, one of those squishy yellow type that are an even cylinder shape.
Roll it up like it's going in your ear, drop it in the bottom of the hammer and let it expand.
Worked great for the 5 or 10 bullets I've ever had to pull...........
