You posted this, shrpshterjoe, several months ago. What rifle did you get? What made your buying decision? What scope?

Howdy I ended up going with the 223, i shot the 223 in the military and rather liked it i am not going to do much shooting over 250-300 yds so it seemed like a good choice. I got the savage 12fv and put a simmons 44 mag 6.5-20 mildot on it. It shoots very well 1/2 moa 90% of the time ( when i do my part ) i took a ground hog with it a couple of weeks ago and it performred very well. After trieng a couple different powders i'm useing Hodgon Benchmark and the 50gr nosler b-t, that seems to be the ticket for this one.
Joe

shrpshtrjoe: that's a great example of getting some great equipment at reasonable prices capable of doing the job. Congratulations. I agree with your choice of cartridge as well as I have used it for the majority of calling with superb results on coyotes, bobcats and badgers. I use the same bullet but stuff the case with H322 which gives 3,555fps.

Its hard for me to imagine calling coyotes in your state, but, I guess they are everwhere these days.

Best of shooting to you.

Bullet selection has alot to do with pelt damage. I shot yotes with a .308 using Sierra Matchking 168 gn with only a small exit hole. This bullet is designed for balance and accuracy, not for super expansion. The net result is a clean blow thru the yote's body.

Joe: It sounds like you made a good choice. I remember my youthful hero, Jack O'Connor and a large bore advocate having words about the suitability of the 270 Winchester. Elmer allowed as how it was a "damned adequate coyote rifle." I must have gotten a really good one, 'cause it worked fine up to and including elk. Very Happy I'm going to have to dig out those volumes and read them again. Till next time.

Very Happy Great choice Joe. Good caliber that you are familiar with and found everywhere. Inexpensive also. Another one to consider, I know you already have this new gun but ya gotta have some backup lol, the combination guns, centerfire over shotgun make versatile tools to use on Field Fidos. You probably have opportunities for very close in shooting there in Maryland. Shotgun with #4's is deadly for close in work and you always have the selector at your finger for longer ranges. Just trying to help you rationalize another gun!! Again, good choice!!
