Howdy. How many of you use them for hunting and witch radios do you use. I have always used Motrorola radios I have 4 different ones I think I have tried to upgrade to better models when I can. I not to long ago upgraded ( or thought I did ) to the T9500 model and I'm not happy with the clarity of them at all, they almost sound intermitent and it's worse with the head sets on I was talking to a guy the other day who has the same model and he had the same complaint. My buddy just got a set of Midlands for Xmas but doesen't have head sets for them yet so I can't compare them yet. I went back to using my older Motorola T5950 it doesen't have the range as the newer one but they are much clearer sounding. What do you guy's like.
Joe

I currently use a Midland GXT-325 to keep up with my hunting buddy. We've used them when about 5 miles apart and had excellent reception. We also sometimes use Pro Ears electronic ear muffs when hunting, especially with handguns, and we plug the radios straight into the muffs so communications won't be heard by any nearby game.

The radios are used to allow us to know where each other is and when the other is moving for safety reasons.

My buddy and I used the Motrorolas. They always worked great for us. He was bad to get out of his stand and walk about. So I would call if I heard something coming towards me. I wear the Walker Game Ear mounted in a hard ear plug, at the range and in the woods. Most times I can hear an animal a good bit of time before I see it.

Up until now we never used radios because the Cascades and the Sierras are just too rugged to allow transmission from canyon to canyon and ridges...Might work better here in all this flat stuff called foot hills...Besides...The last time I DID use a two way radio I was stalkin' a three by three and my buddy called and scared the livin' crap out of me AND the three point...I know...I forgot to turn it off...

Most people aren't aware that the GMRS radios require an FCC license to operate. The license is not cheap either. The last time I checked, it was $80. In some areas, that is more than the radios cost! And, if you and your buddy are hunting and want to use them and are not part of the immediate family, you will both need $80 licenses. The licenses is only good for you and the immediate family - i.e. not friends. I have tended to stay away from them for this reason.

HUH??? Those licences went out with CB required licences. Haven't heard of needing a FCC licence for short range radios both FM and CB...You must be thinking of HAM operaters

I have used a Midland G-11 for some years know, and not complaints at all.

Bushy, I think that shooter is correct on this.
It seems like I have heard about this before.
But who is going to take time to catch us with Mohamod's running around?

Eric

Here in Aussie, we are lucky to have mostly flatlands, and also we have FREE to air either 27Mhz CB or 477Mhz UHF choices.

I am using GME-Electrophone TX475 in UHF for the last 14 years. Great range and lightweight.

Nothing personal Gelandangan, but I'll take the Second Amendment anyday to free two ways.

Bushy, GMRS stands for "General Mobile Radio Service" and requires a license. FRS stands for "Family Radio Service" and does not require a license. What is confusing is that they share several channels! However, as Elyboy pointed out, you have pretty much 0, nada, zero, nothing, etc... chance of getting caught. The FCC has enough problems with other radio services to keep their very few enforcement people busy. As long as you do not interfer with the police, fire department, homeland security, military, etc. you should be ok.

P.S. Take a look at: wireless.fcc.gov/servi...ral_mobile for more info.

O K...I might, I said "might" concede here...I know we used VHF, UHF and CB where I worked. Including Marine bands and never had a license...

"Requires" Dont mean any ones getting one any time soon.
Sharpshooter, I think Motorola has slipped with quality of late. I have some 10 year old Motorola's that work real good, I just purchased a pair of T7400's and Im very unhappy with them. I went back to useing the old Talkabout 250's. Sad

As long as the radios are below a certain wattage output and have an antenna within a certain size aren't they exempt from licensing?
