7 1/2 hevi-shot has an accepted lethal range of about 59 yards give or take if you start it at 1300 fps.

Second-- There is a minimum number of pellets in a 30" pattern that is required to be considered a lethal pattern. This number varies with the species hunted.

Once these requirements are met it doesnt matter what it is fired out of. 8ga 10ga or sling shot makes no difference.

PS. ---Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency...

It is a convenience store in Nevada and ours is open till 11:00PM.

On what? field mice sitting on a fence post?

I've been watching this one with some amusement, and by no means consider myself an expert, but no one I know would attempt a shot that long on a duck with 10 gauge #4's, let alone a 28 shooting 71/2's. If you were shooting doves or bobwhites, I would still suggest that 59 yards may still be a bit of a reach.

Hi Ron,
I would normally not even lower myself to debate such a foolish subject, but sometimes I like to amuse myself a little. That is the fun thing about us guys here on HuntingNut. Say something not too smart, and somebody will have fun for themselves at your expense.

This may come as a shock to you, but I like to give grief sometimes, but expect to get it back big time when I say something that's Very Happy not too smart, which is quite often. Sad

Eric

Eric,

I'm fairly new to waterfowling, mainly shooting geese over grain or greenfields for the last 4 years, but have had occassion to jumpshoot ducks over small farmponds. As such, I can't comment on shooting over decoys, but tryin to whack woodies and mallards "on-the-scoot" is difficult enough, without handicapping yourself with smallbore guns and small pellets.

I tend to agree with you, if Dennis can consistently kill ducks @ 55+ yds and geese @ 40+ yds with his 28, and his son and friend with their .410's they SHOULD be inducted into the waterfowling Hall of Fame, alongside the Duck Commander. Maybe they can stop by the Robertson place and offer some tips to The Boys!

I wouldnt just give away tips without something in return. Maybe Phil would give him some of his doctored up loads he shoots. Dont beleive me? Watch his movies and you will see.

Bottom line, I have never seen anybody shoot a duck or goose regularly at 55 plus yrds. Come on get real. Im sorry anybody who takes 55 plus yrds shots is a piss poor hunter, if you cant kill ducks or geese at less the 20 yrds you suck.

My advice to you is to man up, get used to the kick of a 12 guage with #2's, and most importantly learn how to call so you dont have to shoot birds that far.

I am glad that youre still able to hunt but youre farther south so the geese/ ducks have gone down to u now, most small lakes and marshes are frozen over so they dont like it over here right now!

wish you guys good luck and happy hunting

Dan

I have used bismuth #6's in my 28 ga for early teal season with some success. I don't recommend this for everyone. I usually shoot from a blind and mostly within 15 to 20 yards. Those little blue and green wings :- are
some very fast movers. If I am normally hunting mallards and canada's
I will use my benelli 12 ga.
I tried the 28 ga just because someone told me I couldn't do it. Being a mobility limited hunter I don't like to be told I can't do things.

Just me I guess Very Happy Very Happy

hunting ducks and geese with a 28 gauge is like hunting deer and other big game with a .22 cal but then again my brother killed a big doe with one shot from like 50 yards, got her in the spine and she dropped but then again a .22 cal isnt recommended on a deer either right! some people just like a challenge i guess!

i used to use a Baikal single shot break bbl 12 gauge i used to be able to reload fast enough to get 2 shots off before the ducks were gone and like u said those teals are fast but i did it! unusual things will always happen in hunting

happy hunting and good luck to anyone using a 28 gauge!lol
i guess if ur using #6 or #7s then no wonder ur hitting em but try using 12 gauge with #2 and 1s at average range of 30-50 yards!

oh boy am I gunna drop a fox in the hen house with this then. We have just bought a .410 for our kids to use and learn on/with. I learnt with a .410 and have shot a FEW parrie ducks with it using 3" #4 lead. I have shot 2 close wallabies with the same and have seen the neighbours boy drop a black swan I had just missed. yes I have shot a FEW mallards with this round and a huge number of rabbits and hares. one thing I learnt very early on eg when I was about 11 was that the wee gun is very fussy about what loads you use. eg it loved #4 but #5 or#6 were blown patterns. I have got some lead #7.5s to try and they pattern ok but unfortunately they are only 1/2oz loads not the 3/4oz I wanted. they pattern good at 20yrds and will go through a plastic bottle both sides.why did we get a .410? because we cant find low recoil steel loads in the shops to teach kids with and the .410 with lead is still legal on ducks. the wee fellas will get to finish off a few birds and have a go at the close ones untill they are big enough to handle the 12ga. look out any bunny within 30yrd and possoms up trees are just too easy.I believe there is a place for the smaller gauges but yuo need to be responsible with the range you shoot.
