Well Eric...We sit here in front of our computers arguing about two calibres that have their place in both hunting and bench rest shooting. I noted that one of the biggest complaints about the .30-06 is recoil...Yes I feel that recoil at the range. I HAVE NEVER FELT THAT RECOIL WHEN SHOOTING AT GAME. In my (not so) humble opinion the argument is mote...So a bit of "lighten up" was in order... Very Happy

Hey Joe. Not trying to egg you on bud, I'm simply quoting different reliable info from a powder manufacturer that I use almost exclusively. As Vince put it, it's just a spirited debate.

I have had a .308 in the past and my older brother had an '06. Frankly I wasn't real impressed with either one. Personaly, I prefer a .270 or 7mm Rem mag.

As if someone would need to egg ME on......

I hold spirited debates inside my own head....

What you see here is what spills out.....and I mange to type...before the next debate begins...(insert smart a$$ smiley face here)

Vince I nearly replied when you first posted this thread, the comment was going to be along the lines of 'you sh*t stirrer you'. I now believe that the thread should be along the lines that
'All 30 calibres are hopeless, underpowered, inaccurate, worthless wasters of time and money, and a world wide ban on the sale of all 30 cal projectiles and cartridges to be enforced immediately" would have been more appropriate

So lets all shoot 50 cal Barret's!!

As far as power... Which is more powerful, a 150 grain bullet at 2800 fps or a 150 grain bullet at 2800 fps? I don't think there is any SIGNIFICANT difference between the two until you get into the heavier bullets.

You lost me. The military rounds are loaded with 147 gr projectile for .308 & 173 gr projectile for the '06. Hogdon shows the '06 as up to 3068 fps with a 150 & the 308 up to 2937 with the 150. What did I miss?

A17Shooter,

The 30-06Spring had a 173gr bullet in the M1 Ball form however soliders issued the Garand were issued M2 Ball ammunition in en-bloc clips, which was a 150gr bullet going at 2740fps using IMR 4895 Powder (50gr load) according to the military specs. Smile

The M59 7.62x51mm NATO was a 150gr Ball round as well that was spec'ed at 2750fps. And the M80 Ball was also spec'ed at the same velocity but with a 146gr bullet both the M59 and M80 Ball are using WC846 (46gr load) powder. Smile

A17Shooter,

I never used ANY military surplus rounds, just got a little neat handbook from the US Army that I downloaded that lists most of the spec's on the small arm rounds its freely avalible like most other US Military manuals here is a download link if you want a copy:

www.stevespages.com/page7c.htm

its the US Army Ammunition Data Sheets TM 43 - 0001 - 27

Hey A17, you've found the same numbers I did. I suppose one could manipulate thier loads and make the two the same but, why?

It's been 21 years since I've gotten out of the Army. Just think how much I've missed out on.

Hey 'mitri, did you ever get that M14 that you was looking at? I looking at a SOCOM. I had one in my hands and loved it but, had to go change my drawers when I looked at the price tag.

d_hoffman,

Not yet, the rifle is a big investment at over 2,000$ so to speak for me so its going to take alittle while to save the money I'm gonna need to buy it. Smile

PS. Buying a pack and other items with the same savings money doesn't help ether. Smile

I don't know why you'd manipulate your loads just for the purpose of making them equal velocity. I suppose the military did it so the rifles would have the same capability, trajectory, recoil, etc. Who knows? I hope it made sense to them at the time.

25 years ago this past August, I retired from the Navy after 20. Starting to make me sound old. But, I spent Wednesday scrambling around after coyotes, hogs and squirrels. Kinda glad we didn't find the hogs, cause they usually roll to the bottom of a canyon after being hit and this is the type of country it is.

I did get my Ruger 308 sighted in at 200, incase we saw a likely hog in a place we had a chance of retreiving it. Very Happy Made loads for it by pulling the bullets from some LC 64 and seating a Sierra 150 on top of the mil spec powder charge. That's a loading technicque learned from Mr. Bobbitt, who's 1997 post started this thread.

See, I'm not entirely off topic.

17 Shooter,
That photo reminded me of a conversation I had with my hunting partner, an older guy, when I was in high school. We were driving up to the mountains in NH and he told me we were going to hunt the back side of a mountain that day. I knew there were a lot a bears on that mountain so I said;"Great I might get me a bear." At that point, in a very serious voice he allowed as to how if I shot a bear on that mountain it was my bear and I could do anything I wanted with "my bear." Enough said...... I have remembered that discussion for 43+ years. Very Happy

My partner was telling me about hauling a 400 lb hog up out of one of those canyons. They shot it earlyin the AM and two of them worked all day to get it up where they could load it in a vehicle. Another time, they shot one and tied a turnbuckle to a power pole and used the jeep and an 800 ft rope to pull the hog up out of one of those draws. Course they had to move it by hand to where the end of the rope was. He wasn't saying he wouldn't help, just please use a little common sense. Very Happy
