Yikes, in sweden a moose hunter and his dog was killed by a brown bear. The bear was later shot by other hunters. They found it was wounded. Probably the hunter that was killed got off one shot before the bear got to him.
This is the second time the last houndred years that a bear kills a human.

I am assuming you mean in Sweden. One year in the US, we lost 4 hunters to bears.

Damn, thats bad news.....but then again, if you hunt predators you have to accept that they also are "hunting".

About 12 years ago or so my cousin lost a dog and cowboy hat to a bear. He only went out one more time and managed to get the bear but left the dogs at home.

oh my god, tink, I just gotta know! Was the bear wearing the cowboy hat when your cousin got him?

The last couple of years in northen Ontario and Alberta we could have started referring to nature trail hikers as "bear snacks"

We kept asking him that and he wouldn't answer. Though he was more upset about the hat than the dog.

A while back we started looking at joggers as "cougar treats".

Just remember:

When in bear country always have a companion who isn't as fit as you are. Wink

Bear attacks and bears eating out of peoples garbage and going into populated areas in Northern Ontario are all thanks to the cancellation of the spring bear hunt in Ontario.

I don't carry a gun while hiking, seeing as I generally do it in provincal parks and I also generally do hikes alone, but I do got a knife in easy reach (hidden incase some Park officer decides to cause trouble) perhaps that will help me ?? Laughing

Dimitri? I think if the bear is big enough a knife would just irritate him. Unless you carry a LARGE knife.

Well I'm currently carrying a fixed blade Old Timer 4" blade length not too big but not too small. Smile

Yeah, I have to agree with Crackshot on that one, 4" blade versus bear...put your money on the bear, one slap game over. I think most of the attacks I read about were in parks Big D.I think that most of the bear attacks are on account of bears being startled and reacting accordingly. Bears eating garbage isn't about to stop, they're not going to work any harder for their food than they have to.

I liked English Mike's advice, don't have to run faster than the bear, just have to run faster than the guy beside me, LOL.

I wouldn't want to have to get close enough to a bear to find out if the 4" blade would work. Maybe something a bit longer, like a Claymore.
