I am wondering if anyone is Hunting Montana this year?
Where in the state?
Solo? If so why?
I have tired of waiting for someone to make up their mind whether they can make it or not, so I am going Solo. I will be taking my camper for a base camp and a backpack to find a secluded place for three or four days at a time. I have three weeks to find a decent Buck either Whitetail or Mulie. I do not prefer to hunt alone, but I cannot wait any longer for them to decide. Apparently they do not have a passion for the west as I do. I am 50 this year and we don't get any younger.

Man, I wish I could go...I wouldn't even have to hunt..Just being there would be enough. I rode horses there (The Bitterroots near Hamilton) in the summer of 2003...Nice. Good luck....

Welcome to the site jarhead7481. I wont be hunting MT although I want to! Badly! In fact I've been watching the job market up there for a potential move.
Closest I'll be to MT hunting is Gillette WY which is what, 30 min from the border?

I'll arrive in Montana on Oct. 7th, do a little scoutin' and start hunting on the 10th, untill I get a couple of antelope. My tags are for an area near Roundup, MT. . I'm 70 and have hunted Montana for over 25 years, mostly in the eastern part of the state, sometimes by myself. This year I'll be hunting with a resident who also has a tag for this same area.
Good luck on your deer hunt.

Hunting by your self can be a drag, but also a blessing. Each time I go by my self I get up and get going on time and usually get my shots. I get everything done the way I want with little or no interferance.
A couple of things to keep in mind. Be careful! you are entirely dependant on your self. Take your time, stay rested, drink plenty of water, and have the things you need to spend a night out in the cold if you have to.
For me the worst part about hunting alone, after the hunt you have no one to brag to!

Amen Longwalker...Half of the hunt is the comradry...Brag??? Nooo...You really don't believe that do you?? Every story told at the camp fire is the whole truth. Remember there two kinds of stories..."Once upon a time" and "This is a no-shitter"......

Jarhead..if you are hunting with deer tags only it will be worth your while to contact the Bureau of Land Mgt office anywhere in eastern MT..they have ownership maps that will help you do some longdistace scouting and you can use Terraserver to access free air photos once you pic an area...
If you are fortunate to be able to hunt deer anywhere in MT and want a really good whitetail buck...Hunt the swan river drainage between Seely Lake and Swan Lake...the rut peaks during thanksgiving week and the whitetails migrate from the seely-swan divide toward condon and goat creek...if you cant kill a good one there you didnt hunt.... There is plenty of USFS and Swan State forest ground that is public hunting..most of the roads are closed to vehicles..so it is a foot or horse back hunt..and most guys walk... I worked the Swan State forest for about 8 years..and my tags always got filled...sure miss my Montana hunting....
