When traveling by air, how do you keep you scope from getting banged up by baggage handlers? I have a hard sided case. Is that enough? Do you take you scope out of the rings and carry it with you?

Thanks for any info.

get a good hard sided perfeably aluminum heavy gauge case and you should be good, of course check after you get to where you are going cause it could still be knocked off zero..

Get a GOOD case and you should be fine. I have traveled with firearms by air quite a bit in the past year and have had no problems. I actually prefer SKB plastic cases to the aluminum ones, at least the aluminum ones I have looked at. The aluminum ones I have seen have had sharp edges on the inside that could potentially scratch firearms if they shift during transit. SKB actually will pay up to 1500 if your firearm is damaged in their case during travel. They will also send you replacement latches for free if the latches are ever damaged. I just returned from a visit to PA and had 4 rifles in my SKB case and had no problems. Rifles remained zeroed, of course they should still be checked.

Most of your better hard cases will give pretty good protection. However, all bets are off when you get to the customs folks who open the case and take the gun out. When I arrived in South Africa some member of the police had twisted my tactical scope knobs counter clockwise, both knobs. That put the first test round at the top right corner of an 8 1/2 x 11 at about 75 yards.

Always check your scope settings before you go out hunting.....

checking the weapon after shipment also applies to bows/archery - best to check. The biggest thing about shipping a weapon is making sure the fit is solid while transporting. Some cases have generic cut-outs, I stay away from these.

Swampfox makes a good point, it is wise to check your scope settings before you travel/ship - Either write down the settings or take a digital photo with your phone or camera to give you a good base to check against before you check it at the range.

Wiley,
Good stuff, but not exactly what I meant in my poor explination. What I meant to say was; make sure you shoot the gun to check the settings before you actually start the hunt, once you get to your destination.

My experiance is SA was after the young PH in training wanted me to pick up gun, drive over to the field where they were and shoot a blasebuck. This I refused to do, without first checking the zero. As it turned out, it was a good thing that I insisted that we stop on the way to the area where the critters were, to fire a round.

By the by, what is that you have on your master wings, it looks like somthing but I can not make it out.

Also, good quality scopes allow the elevation and windage adjustment scale to be set to zero. Once sighted in, simply move the scale to the zero point. This will advise of intentional/unintentional movement of the adjustment knobs.

Since travel, changes in elevation or temperature can effect a rifle's zero, they should be fired at the hunting site before heading to the field. This also allows for fouling.
