At what distance do you sight in your rifle Question

Some rifle shooters zero in at 25 yards while others favor sighting in “way out there.”
Personally, I prefer dead on @100 yards. What about you?

The hunting in my area is never more than 200 yards, unless you happen to catch one out on the power lines. I just sight my 270 class calibers to print 1 1/2 " high @ 100 yards. That should be dead on @ 200 and about 6 or 7 " low @ 300. That way I can hold dead on in all but the most extreme ranges.

It depends. I agree with Blaine and sight in most of my deer rifles to hit 1 1/2" to 2" high at 100 yards. My muzzleloaders are dead on at 100 yards and my slug guns are dead on at 75 yards. All the best...

I sight in dead on at 200 yards. Dending which gun I'm shooting, that puts me at roughly 3/4" to 1.2" high at 100. The longest shooting lane I have on my lease is 225 yards so that pretty much puts me right on anywhere in the lane.

It depends on what caliber I'm sighting in. There is a big difference between sighting in my 22-250 or 25-06 and say my 45-70 if you want to use each caliber to their full potential.

250 or 300 yards depending on which hunting rifle it is. My Muzzleloaders are sighted in at 115 yards

I hate to say this: but, it depends on the trajectory of the bullet and the maximum range I think I may shoot at: ussually 300 yards. Most of the time, that's going to put it somewhere between 2 and 2.5 inchs high at 100 yards and 2 inchs low at 300 yards. That way, I don't have to field adjust my scope all the time. If I think it's past 200 yards I can hold an inch high. If I think it's under 200 yards, I can hold dead on.

I use different "zero" for different guns depending on what I am hunting.

My 25-06 is set up for a 300 yard zero, for everything.

The .223 is set for 200 yards, while the 22 hornet is set to 100 yards.

My 338-06 is generally set up with a 300 yard zero as well.

My 44 magnum is set up for a 50 yard zero. Which makes it just about point and shoot out to 100 yards. Which for a revolver is a long ways.

How do I keep it all straight ? I use stickers on the boxes of ammunition I am going to hunt with, and I put a sticker on the scope lens covers.

I generally sight in to be about an inch high at 100yds. That will put me in range at most of the distances I shoot. I may have to vary this if shooting round nose bullets, or may have to make adjustments for a different weight since the lighter bullets will shoot higher than the heavy ones. The best method is probably to simply sight in with the bullet you're actually going to hunt with and let that be your guide. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

Hi

Far be if from me to tell anyone else about something I just found...

BUT HAVING SAID THAT...

I just found this site's Point Blank exterior ballistics program.

Now, I want to hunt wild North-American 30Lb. card-stock at 500 yards, and my goal is to be able to put as many little holes as possible as close together as possible anywhere within that range, so your needs may be different.

By usug the software for just a few hours (I just found this site this morning), I've found that, using .308 Win. factory match loads, a 475 yard zero gives me a 15 inch rise and an 18 inch drop inside the entire 500 yards. (Uhhh... if I'm DOING this correctly - still problematical - gimme a few days.) This lets me compress my ballistics chart a bit and still get that card-stock trophy I'm looking for.

A bit of tinkering with the software, changing your rifle setup and loads and your maximum range, and you may get an idea of where to zero your weapon.

Hi

I can't edit the above, since I posted it before I registered, but..

NOPE! Not doing it right! All operator error, too!

it's 13-and-a-bit high and 13-and-a-bit low inside the 500 yards, sighted at 425 yards.

I'm getting better at this! Pretty soon, I'll be competant!

Confused Well - maybe I won't SUCK at it, anyhow. Confused
