I have hunted in Colorado for the past 6 years , and I'm getting too old to keep waiting for preference points, so I have decided to try a couple of different areas including 4 and 11. Can anyone offer advise for eother of these areas?

If it was up to me, I would choose 11 - not quite as packed. Depending on what season you hunt, area 4 is really packed with people for 2nd and 3rd rifle. If you don't mind packing back in there for deer, area 4 can be very successful with both low land and high elevation muley's - good sized mature bucks, but you either need to be willing to hike it or go by horse at least 1.5 to 2 miles. Area 4 can be successful either way, but if you aren't interested in getting back in there, I am afraid you would find it rather packed with hunters. I hunted area 4 last year, lots of does and small bucks, but I didn't work back in there. If you work area 4, look for areas closer to the Wyoming border. Area 11 is a little better, some of the surrounding areas get hunter populated but 11 gets stuck in the middle and there are a ton of deer in there, most of them you do not have to walk too far back in there - I have not seen the size in there that I have seen in surrounding areas, but I haven't ever done anything but scouted in there. If you want a large area with both easy and not so easy hunting, try to get a leftover buck tag for area #3 - lots of area to cover, lots of public land and lots and lots of deer - I have gotten a couple wall hangers from that area! Good luck.

Well, as luck would have it, I would get great advise on area 11 (from several folks) and get drawn for area 4....I'm not really disappointed, I have read statistics for the last several years and it seems to run about 60% harvest ratio in area 4. This is similar to area 70 where we have been hunting, and I've always been happy about the amount of game in the area....My only issue now is to find BLM or a SWMA to camp and hunt in. From what I have been able to gather searching the internet, a lot of area cannot be accessed by motor vehicle, which presents a problem. We certainly don't mind hiking in, but would obviously rather drive to an area and walk throughout the day. When you suggested going further back in....can you give me an idea of where we would camp/set up....Are you referring to Routt Natl Forest? Would you give me some driving directions or GPS coordinates....Anything would help as we have never been to that area. Any other suggestions are welcomed.....Thanks again.
