Goosehunter,
I have both calibers - a Marlin 917V with a 6-24X42mm scope and also a Savage model 12FV in .204 Ruger with a 6-24X44mm scope. I have been shooting the .204 the most. I like my Marlin 17HMR but I just enjoy shooting the .204. I think both guns have their place. The 17HMR is accurate and can kill small game (squirrels, rabbits, p dogs, etc.) out to 150 yards or so. The .204 can go a lot futher, more like 400-500 yards if you are steady enough. In my safe, there is room for both.... Smile

I have both calibers also:

17Hmr in a Ruger 77/17, all weather barrel. Simmons 44mag 6.5-20

17H2 I made out of a 10/22 action, regular ruger .920 target stock, EABCO barrel and bolt assembly.

I am also going to buy a thumbhole stock, and another EABCO barrel and bolt assembly to make another one. If you go to www.natchezss.com you can but remington .17hm2 ammo for $3.99 a box I believe. I bought myself 1000 rounds to keep me held over. I also bought 1000 rounds of the Remington 17Hmr from them when it was on sale for $5.99 a box awhiole ago.

This scope looks interesting. It has a precalculated adjustment for 17HMR's

www.opticsplanet.net/b...x40ao.html

If I didnt already have a scope on my 17HMR, I'd seriously be giving this some thought.

^^^not me. I will not buy another bsa product. I purchased a 3-9x50 scope for my moms 10/22. The crosshairs jump all around. I replaced it with a Simmons 3-9x50, and no regrets. Just my .02 though.

I have to side with you guys. I have had a lot of problems with bsa in the past. However I did break down and buy one of these sweet 17's and I got to say for the money it really isn't a bad scope. In fact I really like mine.

I wanted a good extended range bunny and fox rifle - something with a bit more reach than 22LR and liked what I read about HMR. Quite frankly the 17M2 made no sense.

I've always liked the Sako quality and decided to go for the Quad, even though at that stage I had no interest in any of the other barrels as I had a perfectly good Brno 22.

After my first weekend away without a single crawl off I was happy that all the hype was true. I've since added the 22LR barrel to the equation and can not believe how much fun I'm having with rimfire.

The only complaint I've got with the Quad is the scope sits a tad high to facilitate changing barrels - nothing that the Beartooth comb kit hasn't fixed.

I too was interested in the .17 mach II but ened upt with a 17HMR Savage i fell in love with at a gun show. I think the 17M II would be a fun little rifle and ammo is about $3.00 cheaper, if I decided to buy one I think I would lay in a good supply of ammo in the event this rifle did go the way of the 5mm. I would pick up a couple boxes or more every month depending on what a person can afford and then of course the wife and kids are always wanting to know what you want for birthday, fathers day and christmas. Just keep telling them .17 mach II ammo.
Anyway thats what I would do. But be sure to keep a .22lr around for lots of plinking fun, it's cheaper and good practice.

This is an H&R that I built in 17 HMR that will very easily shoot 1/4" to 1/2" groups at 100 yards most any day of the week. The scope is a Weaver 36X target, the trigger pull has been adjusted to 8 ounces and the barrel is a Green Mountain bull barrel....
