Morax,

Fly fishing can be fun, sort of broke my cheapy fly rod while trying to reel in a big salmon using spinning technic (which the flyrod didn't want to deal with the pressure) Embarassed

freedyf,

I've heard spawn sack. Many good salmon fishing spots in Idaho ?? Smile

Bushmaster,

I've seen the term "roe" used before but when I saw it I was at the grocery store and that was on a container of caviar. Laughing

Dimitri

Your terminology is correct Bushmaster. Roe is the term for fish eggs, particularly salmon. Spawning is the act of egg laying and fertilization, fry are the offspring once hatched. There are many species of fish which are cannibalistic. They will dine on other fish's eggs, fry and fish smaller than themselves in their own species and other species as well. A major bait for almost any fish is a "baitfish", a live (or in some cases dead) fish. Sometimes whole, sometimes used as "cut bait". Just stop and think of some of the most popular lures... they resemble FISH!

And you are also correct 4rum.. Very Happy ..As a mountain stream angler (I cast steel and brass at them. If they don't take the hook I can always bean them over the head with the lure). I'm a spin fisherman. And yes. Salmon will take a fly. I am a Trout, Steelhead and Salmon angler. Here in Missouri I may have to relearn the knowledge that I had when I was a kid fishing for Pan fish. Crappy, bluegill, perch, bass and what ever they have in the lakes and ponds around here. Not sure that I'll use a stick for a bobber anymore though. Very Happy

I've done that before Bushmaster, using a stick for a bobber, I only carry very little compared to alot of other fisherman I know and I see in tackle and one day I lent out 2 bobbers and I lost my other one to a big bass so I took a stick and used my knife to make it into a bobber. It worked though! Laughing

Yellow Perch is the fish I'm after though while fishing, the bass are the annoying buggers that hook onto my lures when I dont want them to. Sad

I have had the priveledge of fishing for both Atlantic salmon (in Ireland, where I spent the first 20 years of my life) & Pacific salmon (west coast of Canada & Alaska). While all Pacific salmon die after spawning, Atlantic salmon can & do survive. A few of these fish do repeat the spawning cycle and typically return as bigger Spring & Autumn fish. The 'summer' salmon (grilse) are considerably smaller and represent first time spawners. Post-spawn fish also return to a silvery/grey colour in the river before they return to the sea.
