I'm looking for a jacket to take hunting in SE Washington for Elk. We're going to be up in the hills at the end of October so there will probably be snow on the ground (guessing 20+ degrees) so what kind of jacket should I be looking at assuming proper layering with thermals? I would prefer something I can wear every day so no camo. I just wasn't sure if I should go with Gore-Tex for the noise issue. Thanks.

A good wool coat has always been my favorite when hunting out in the Northwest that time of year. Woolrich is a good brand. Works well with layering. Good Luck on your hunt.--tr

Wool is a good idea. Also layer up so you dont over dress for the hotter weather. Yes I know its going to be "cold" but some days will be more cold then others and you dont want to be sweating when its warmer or cold when its colder.

Multi-layer clothing is probably the best way to dress for cold weather. Smile

Thats my 2 cents.

Layer, layer, layer. When there is a chance of warmer weather, layering is the way to go as you can remove layers, yet also is best for staying warm. If you got to have a jacket, consider Carharts. Wool is great, but, it makes me itch, Carharts work well for me.
Keep it coming...

+1 on wool. It is a truly amazing fabric that has served me well for big game hunts when the weather is chilly or snowy. I have a medium weight jacket. Its quiet when moving through brush, too, and, for me, has a wider temperature range of usefulness and comfort.

Most of the Gore Tex jackets made for hunting these days are a short nap fleece on the outside, and are very quiet.
I like some of the jackets that have a zip out liner, so you can wear the Gore Tex shell in mild weather, or just the liner, or both when it's cold.

Go with wool.

If you have a hard time finding a good tight knit wool jacket, go to www.gandermountain.com

I have worn it for years.
It is camo, but is a tight knit heavy wool

Hunted in the NE woods for years. I always wore a heavy woven, long knap, light weight, wool jacket over shirts and insulated shirts. Long knap wool will bead water and stop snow as long as you do not rub against it.

Today in the SE and around the world, I use a light weight Gortex jacket that extends down past the curve of the butt cheeks. Under the jacket, if it is cold, I wear a LS shirt against the skin and heavy wool sweater over the shirt, under the jacket. For varied climates and different degrees of cold, gortex and layering is the very best, new technology. I also have a matching set of gortex pants. In the wind and rain, with a wide brim hat, I stay warm and dry. Oh, the jacket and pants go into my carry on bag, they fold or wad up into a very small space.

The secret with gortex is to have an undergarmet that wicks moisture off the skin. A good set of underwear and gortex over works great.

My old wool jacket is no longer even in my closet, it is gone. snif, snif... :-(

get something called a adarondike{sp} parka. i got mine at a army surplus store. it is a thin hooded pullover parka which has a supertight waterproof weave. it is waterproof and windproof yet weighs less than a pound. its not made to be anything but a outershell which retains your bodyheat in extreme weather. im one of these people who freezes when ever it gets the least bit chilly and since i got this jacket i have not been cold in the woods once.

ps mines military surplus and is camo

I wouldn't advise getting something big and bulky. You're probably better off with something light but still big so you can add layers beneath it if necessary. The key is to add clothes in layers. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

the parka im talking about is basically a airtight shell made to go over layers of other clothes, it will roll up small enough to fit in a small daypack.

the weave of the fabric is the secret

If you are going to be around the Malheur County area, the weather in late October can be warm. Of course, it can also be colder'n a witch's smile. You just never know.

Layer is right! Good, tough pants over some sort of long underwear..I have a set of Black Silk longies for warmer temps, and do I get LOTS of ribbing from my kids over that! What do they know? Very Happy I think they look rather handsome.

Up top, underwear, zip neck turtleneck, sweater, then a shell of some sort. A surplus field jacket comes to mind. Liner, or no, your call.
A good hat/cap that will fit under the hood and/or a fleece hood will be a good idea.

Be sure yo' FEETS is warm and dry!

Other than that, I dunno. Good luck! Very Happy

Well, I've read everything that everyone else has said and seein' as how most of them are from Canada or at least snow country I ain't gonna contradict them.

It gets pretty cold here in Australia, depending on where you are of course, and I agree wholeheartedly.....layering is the way to go.

When I go into the really cold areas I wear Thermactyl long leg and long sleeve underwear then layer up with cotton shirts followed by a close knit woollen top. I also have a zip up turtle neck top that is very light, but very warm (its actually US Army issue). For the wet weather I use a goretex copy called Airtex...same horse, different name....totally waterproof and it breathes. To keep your feet dry and in good order I suggest goretex socks. They work a treat.

Enjoy your trip. Even in the cold it can be very enjoyable.

Cheers, Vince

One hidden benifit of layers is that they form "insulated" gaps of air. Air is a horrible conductor of heat and electricity so it allows air pockets to form which will help keep you warm. Smile

This is the reason why although you can get seriously burnt touching the stove's range if you have your hand 3 inches away you just feel alittle heat comming off it but touching the pot you have on the range will get you burnt as metal conducts heat better. Smile

And remember if you are starting to break a sweat REMOVE a layer before you start to freeze because of it Very Happy
