I was cleaning the .243 with a borebrush covered with a cloth patch. Trying to swab the barrel with copper remover. Well the bore brush WAS A LITTLE SNUG going in. Then when it was in about 5-6 inches it stuck/froze. Wont move at all. Any ideas how to remedy this? I am concerned about getting a copper rod and driving the bore brush back toward the chamber because that is the shortest way out. Right now I have the rifle tipped up. Put some dura-lube down the barrel hoping it will reduce friction to allow me to push the bore brush down and out the end of the barrel. This is a first. !!!

DO NOT REVERSE THE DIRECTION OF THE BRUSH!!!.

Normally you choose brushes that only only snuggly fit the bore. You want your bristles to stay generally perpendicular to the wall of the bore. If they get on too much of an angle reversing stroke causes the bristles to dig in and scratch the bore. I never reverse strokes with brass brushes unless they fit fairly loose in the bore (nylon brushes are ok).

I think you need to just add some lube from the other end of the rifle, then force it on through. Hopefully you are using a coated rod and a bore guide Smile

Yes I have a boreguide. So far I think I will let the lube work and see about pushing it through later.......unless a miracle cure comes along...!!!!

I jammed one up really bad once too... so you arent alone. I carefully tapped the end of my rod with a wooden mallet carefully... it slowly worked its way along.

Side note I also sometimes use a patch over a brass brush, but I found you need to drop down a caliber so it doesnt get stuck (thats how I stuck mine really good). Use .277's in a .30, .243's in a .270... .22 in a .243 etc.

Good luck Smile

This is no help right now but after you get it out buy some nylon brushes to wrap the patch to for copper removing solvents. Also you don't need more than one thickness around the brush. If you have a big patch that wraps around the brush more than that you get, well you know, a stuck brush and patch. The Nylon really helps though and you don't dammage your brass brushes in the process with copper solvent eating them up. No false blue patches with a nylon brush either.
Dallens suggestion should get it on down the bore with the oil you put in.
Like you, I have been there and done that too. Very Happy

OUCH !! Unfortunately been there, done that.

I agree wholeheartedly with Dallan....do not reverse the direction. Using your cleaning rod, gently tap the brush through until it is clear of the barrel. Be prepared to trash your cleaning rod though. It may not happen, but then again.... Maybe a piece of wooden dowel of the appropriate diameter and length would be useful.

Most importantly....BE PATIENT. Don't go like a bull at a gate.

I have an old plastic coated one piece .22 cleaning rod for this very purpose....just hope I never need it again.

Good Luck.

Cheers, Vince

Ok, been there done that myself, not once, but several times. Enough so that I have worked out a prochedure.

Never reverse a brass brush with a patch on it in the bore.

First, remove the action from the stock or the barrel from the action on a break action gun. Then hold the barrel up and the rod butt down, tap the end of the rod on the floor, with a pushing action. Straight down. If you leave the stock on, it tends to pull to one side and will bend the rod. Use the weight of the barrel. This is like using a 4 or 5 pound sledge, so gently, increasing the force of the taps untill the patch moves. Once the patch moves, and it will, it should tap right out.

Now that is an EXCELLENT idea... unscrew your rod, remove it. Get the largest diameter dowel that fits easily in your bore... bang on that with a mallot. It will preserve your rod and bore at the same time.

Dallan, No, No, if you do that, the small size of the brush thred end may split the dowel, lodging it in the bore with the brush. Then you will have a real mess.

Humm Bore brushs, I clean from muzzle to chamber because thats how my rifle is (cant run the brush from chamber to muzzle easily) Smile

I normally pull it all the way through clearing the chamber then reverse the direction. Is that bad ?? Confused

As for the stuck brush if its a copper brush put a plug on one side of the chamber and if you got any sort of copper solvent (the stronger the better) how about filling the barrel with it and letting it sit over night ?? Confused

Hey ya Swampy....you are right about bare dowel, however a smart man would take steps and do a little work to ensure that wouldn't happen. Wouldn't be hard to do..a small plug of nylon or similar material would do it.

That is the most interesting solution to this problem by far. Dimitri, when I need a problem solver, I'm going to you. Smile

rrogacki,

It might be interesting but I never tried it. Smile I figure if people complain about copper solvents eating up brass brushs that might just work depending on the stright of the copper solvent, not to eat the whole brass brush but just eat it enough to let it slide out without as much pressure. Very Happy

Have you got this removed yet ?

the wood dial rod is a good idea.
but do not try to hammer it threw right away.
I would first take a drill bit the same size as the push rod threads, and drill a hole threw the wood rod , so the threads would go threw it and not split the end of the wood rod.
after that you should be safe to start hammering the object threw the end of the barrel. and not have to worry about scarring up the rifle barrel.

I know I have seen wood push rods at gun smith shops. you may be able to pick one up that already has a metal sleve with threads , they will not plit and are made for the job.

you can take it to a gun smith, but I am sure he will just use what force is needed to get it out. I am sure you can do the same , with out hurting the barrel.

let us know how it works out.
