I'm thinking of getting a Ruger 10-22 for my daughter. She is 8 years old and has been shooting since she was 4. her old single shot stevens is now becoming too short. I think she is ready for an upgrade.
Opinions, Suggestions?

I have a 10-22 with a 4x Bushnell on it that both of my daughters love to shoot. Well, anyone who shoots it loves it. It simply hits where you point it making the young shooters want to keep shooting!.

A long time ago I bought my then 8 year old daughter a 10/22 with a Weaver 4 power scope. she is now 32 and training her daughters with it...A VERY good investment....

IMO, while the 10/22 is a fun rifle to shoot and kids love them, there are better firearms for the money. The 10/22 is cheaply made with an aluminum receiver and poor accuracy. I bought one for my ten year old son and he beat the snot out of it in no time. Mad If I had to do it over again today, I would buy the Remington model 552 or 572. Both are excellent rifles that will last a lifetime. If the Remingtons are too pricey, the new Savage's with the AccuTrigger are great guns for kids and cost about the same as the Ruger and are a whole lot more accurate. But of course this is just my opinion.

Those 10-22 Rugers have some very nice after market barrels that are available for a fair price, require no machine work to instal and make the gun as accurate or more accurate then my Remington Which is good enough at 25 yards to make a ragged hole that can be covered with a 45 caliber slug. They even have special competitions for the 10-22 where that accuracy is put to the test. You can get a barrel, stock, trigger, and just about anything you want to make accuracy in those cheep rifles.
OK, after you invest in all those accesories you have spent enough to get a nice bolt action rifle but in an auto the accuracy is really quite unbelievable.

rrogacki: I have a 552,but my daughter is at that akward size where a full size rifle is too big and a youth is too small. That why I was leaning towards the 10-22. With replacement parts as readily available as they are, i figured i could buy a new rifle and a used stock to cut to length to fit her. as she grows i could add on to that used stock. Kinda redneck but hey I'm just thinkin bout it.

I have a 10-22 that my Kids shoot well, I trimmed the stock to fit them and have an extra for replacement when they are grown, They are cheap but unless your Kid uses it for a pry bar or a cruch it should last a lifetime.

MC223 - You are on the money, trimming the stock sounds like the right way to go. I don't think it sounds redneck at all, seems pretty smart to me.

After my son trashed the 10/22, I bought a new barrel, stock and a trigger tuning kit from Authur Brown. Here's the link if you want to check it out. www.eabco.com The Ruger is super nice now Very Happy . A little work and some money went a long way towards turning that gun around. Now I won't let my son anywhere near it.

I'm on my 3rd 10/22. The oldest was given to my oldest grandson, the second oldest to my younger grandson. I missed those two I gave away so last year I got a new one in stainless and with the longer barrel. We all live here in Arizona and get together often in the desert for some plinking action. These guns remain accurate & reliable and we've shot thousands of rounds thru them. I think they are a good investment, I think I'll get one in 22 mag.

Even though I do own one I still think that they are just like HONDA cars. They are cheap, inexpensive to shoot, and you can spend a $100,000 on it with accesories to get it to perform better. Just like the famous ricers.... Very Happy

However as far as being a godsend....I dont like the fact that in factory config they jam, misfire, shove empty cases into the wood, and as far as I have seen each one is picky about which type of bulk amo they shoot. Mine shoots Fedral most reliably, where a friends carbine shoots Remington best. So splitting a box of ammo doesn't work. Petty I know but they are still opinions.

Sorry Joe you got one of those picky versions. I know what you're talking about though as a friend of mine has the same problem. I haven't experienced anything like that with the ones I've had or have now. I did get one of my grandsons a Mosseberg "Plinkster" for $88 new at Walmart that shoots surprisingly well. It had a tendancy to jam, but discovered it doesn't like all the magazines, certain ones are trouble free. I wasn't expecting much from an $88 gun, but it turns out to be a good investment.

Hmmmm, I've had a 10/22 since ohhh 1968? (the same one) and it's been the most trouble free semi auto 22 I've ever seen.
When I ran the sporting goods dept in a big box store we sold those things by the pallet load.
Tell ya something about them, tho... I was the guy that got all the complaints. I learned real fast that if someone had feeding problems with a 10/22 to ask them what magazines they used. I NEVER had a guy tell me his 10/22 jammed with factory mags.
Every 'jamming ' 10/22 was caused by those after market banana clips- switch to factory mags, the jamming disappears.

Jack, I'm with you. I did use some after market mags with my 10/22's, and though not a big deal, did have some occasional feeding problems. Never had any problems using the Ruger versions.
