|
Just spent 4 days, over the Australia Day long weekend, in hospital (the air con was amazing given the current temperature and humidity here).
Are ya sitting down...I don’t want you to fall over laughing. I was rebuilding the electrics in one of my radio control planes (about 1500mm wingspan). I noticed a wobble in the electric motor shaft so decided to test it under power. To do it properly I needed to have the propellor fitted (about 12” long made of a polypropylene material). Anyway, it vibrated a fair bit and the vibration caused it to drop a wheel off the side of the table and my arm, which was initially in a safe position was no longer. The prop got me about BBRRRRRTTTTT times before I cut the power. Because the prop is new, it chopped into me fairly well.
I grabbed my arm to control the bleeding and called Tricia to assist. A sterile pad and bandage covered everything, then my daughter drove me to the Emergency Room for them to assess and fix. The Dr there said she couldn’t suture it because of the width so I would need to see either a Plastic Surgeon or Orthopaedic Surgeon to fix it in the operating theatre. Now, because it was the Australia Day long weekend there were of course a number of “hold my beer and watch this” incidents, as well as car accidents, the hospital was very busy. Prioritising of patients meant I kept getting bumped down the list for treatment...hence a 4 day wait to get things sorted. Finally got it sorted yesterday and home last night. I have no idea what is under the dressing, which has to stay in place for 10-12 days when I see my Dr to have the sutures removed. Right now, all I know is it’s damn sore.

Vince, do we need to wrap you in bubble wrap and kevlar?? That's pretty ugly but apparently not serious, or the docs would have reacted quicker. Take care of yourself!

I do hope there is no plans to buy a larger RC helecoptor or drone anytime soon.
talk about scoring a home goal Mate.....
now you make sure and listen to the doctors...better get Trish to block one of your ears when they giving you instructions so it can bounce around and sink in.

Its only a flesh wound, youve been hurt worse playing ukkers at smoko.
Cup of concrete? Milk and 2 sugars?
Seriously Vince the lengths you go to for airconditioning.
I hope it doesnt hurt to much and it doesnt get infected, time to give the body a well earned rest from healing.
Any truth to the rumour youve painted the plane orange an are taking it down the gun club?
Get well mate...

So besides snakes, spiders, aints, and so on, they also have dangerous propellors down under…
Vince I think you're feeling real old at this moment

For crying out loud Vince. I would suggest that you never play with an automobile engine when it's running.
Shot of whiskey, a cushy recliner, a serving wife and a game on TV should do it

Dude, that arm is chewed up pretty good.
Watch out for infection.

Trembles, they tell me chicks dig scars mate.
Mike of Pomgolia...yeah, no two ways about that mate.
Punkin, the pic doesn’t do it credit...it doesn’t show the depth of the gouge mate. Not so sure that bubble wrap would be any use, but Kevlar should help mate. Might have to look into a full Kevlar bodysuit. The Drs had to prioritise their patients, which is commonsense, so I wasn’t complaining when they bumped me down the list...I understood. As I said, it was the Australia Day long weekend, so there was no shortage of “hold my beer and watch this” moments, plus car accidents and booze filled fights...3 guys were stabbed at one and one of those guys is still fighting for his life.
Elvis...yes mate, although not exactly a wee plane at 1500mm wingspan and it is electric powered, so has no shortage of grunt mate. I suspect the prop was spinning at around 10k rpm when it got me. I cut the power as soon as it moved, but simply wasn’t quick enough. Tricia mows the lawns so I’m pretty safe in that area. As for another RC plane, I actually have 4 and I’m in the process of rebuilding an even bigger one with a more powerful electric motor...hm...might have to be a tad more careful with that one methinks.
Pete, yeah, it’s not as nasty as it could have been mate, but it’s still nasty in its own right. Main thing is they thoroughly cleaned it out before closing. Infection will hopefully not be an issue...I’ve had more antibiotics in the last week than I have in the last year. I did in fact consider painting it orange, but it’s too expensive to blast out of the sky...it a 1500mm wingspan WWII J3 Cub.
Aloys...yes mate...certainly feeling my age mate, but I’m a young fella beside some of the guys here so I’m not whinging.
Bushy, I’m very VERY aware of the steel fan on my daughters 1973 LJ Torana when I’m working on it mate. Any others I work on all have electric thermo fans that are encased. As for the whisky and recliner...all in place mate.
Gelan, yep, it got me pretty good. As I said, about BBRRRTTTT hits before I stopped it. Infection shouldn’t be a problem with all of the IV antibiotics they fed me mate...I hope.

How did the propeller fair?
Are you going to use it next flight or retire it to a plague like Pkslinger?

No problems mate...it was a new polypropylene propellor, so it has a little flexibility to it...plus it’s too expensive to replace so I didn’t bear it up for biting me.
RePete...my arm is going ok now. I have the usual healing twinges, so it should be good. There are 13 sutures in it, spaced around nearly 1/2” apart...it’s not a small cut.
Aloys, the plane and prop are all good, no damage. I didn’t beat up on the plane...it was my fault and the plane is too expensive.
