Rancher
A man owned a small ranch near Great Falls, Montana. The Montana Labor Department got a tip that he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an investigator out to interview him.
"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the investigator.
"Well," replied the rancher, "there's my ranch hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1200 a week plus free room and board."
"The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $1000 per week plus free room and board."
"Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day, with no days off, and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week and pays his own room and board."
"But, I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night, and he also sleeps with my wife occasionally."
"That's the guy I want to talk to... the half-wit," says the investigator.
"You're talking to him," replied the rancher

Thanks for the morning chuckle, Tremblay. I can see this being a true story. Were you the investigator?

Nooo...The half-wit.
Sorry Tremblay. I just couldn't help myself.
Blame it on slimjim. It's his fault. He set it up.

I was self employed for a while, Had a machinist and a welder working for me. They worked 40 hour weeks, got two weeks of vacation and 5 sick days a year, all paid. I made just over half what they made and I didn't get vacation or sick pay. I had a good reputation in t5he area and only had two come-backs in 20 years. One of those was abuse and no maintenance on a transmission for a drag car and I rebuilt it anyway on my dime. He drove it three seasons without changing the fluid or adjusting the bands. I pointed out that the paperwork had maintenance intervals on it and next time he was going to pay for both rebuilds. Had he paid for the rebuild it would have cost him about $1000. It was a C4 built for a 500 HP engine. The car he was racing was a 2900 pound "streetable" drag car. He just changed the rear tires when he got to the track. After a day of racing he drove it back home. There was a bit too much motor for me to drive on the street but he seemed to like it.
The other come-back was my fault. I misplace a thrust bearing on a C4 for an 850 HP pinto with nitrous and turbo. I had him watch as I pulled it apart so he could see what caused it. He got a new transmission out of the deal and back home the same day. That was a full roller C4 with manual shift only. He paid a good price for it the first time so I didn't lose much on the replacement. I did get a customer for life. Until I had to close the doors after my accident.

I never took up racing - drag racing is a battle to find the next weak link in the drive train. When you stop breaking things you need more horse power. I prefer road racing and hill climb. Those are sports where tuning what you have is what makes the difference in the cars and the driver wins the races.
I did like the challenge of building transmissions that would hold up to whatever the motor and team did to them. I found out along the way that the C4 was actually stronger than the C6 and that you can stack a bunch of clutches into that small case. The C6 transmissions would break because of the big open hole for the pan and to make it work you had to build a steel spacer between the pan and the case. The only time I ever saw a c4 case break was when a rookie decided to increase the pressure to take the place of more clutches. When the intermediate band slams on with too much pressure it blows the anchor /adjusting pin out through the case wall.
