In 1871 in Dalhousie Township the deer disappeared and Archibald Browning decided to put an end to it by going on a hunting spree in 1873.
One of the wolves he caught was over 3 feet high, 6 feet long and weighed over 80 pounds. It was purchased by the Museum of Natural History in Montreal.
Browning ended up killing 72 wolves 70 bears to save the deer population in Dalhousie Township.

What were that many predators eating if there were no deer around?

No, the real reason they were re-introduced was to stop/reduce people from hunting. This has been successful. The wols have decimated the elk herds where they have taken up residence. If I remember correctly, the original studies of "natural harmony" was based on only 66 mating pairs of wolfs. The are now more than 4,000 mating pairs. Plus the introduced the Alaskan wolf which is a much larger species than the Rocky Mt wolfs that used to be there.

slim....we have seen the docos about yellowstone and how it is now healthier than ever....there is a tie in with otters, willows, deer and the wolf fits in somewhere too. .....
as to what they were eating....anything that moved slow enough to catch would be a safe bet.
