right ho folks where to start Scratch

ok the begining Very Happy

did a bit of horse trading and ended up with nice Zastava controlled feed mauser in .308 winchester,fired a few shots at 70ish yards checking zero and had bullets touching,shot the two pigs with Meg and then the phantom knock sound rifle sometimes made got better of me...it wasnt scope or mounts so kept looking,one afternoon I happened to have barrel in one hand and stock in other and wiggled it AND IT MOVED wtf

noise found.... got out screwdriver and took stock off and jaw hit the floor...NO BEDDING AT ALL not a nelly,a blob of bird pooh/automotive bog at forened was it,the recoil lug was sitting on wood but not touching it anywhere but on base,all the recoil was being taken by pillars and they werent fixed Sad

you can see where recoil lug was sitting in top photo.
so anyway,rifle sat in cupboard/safe for weeks while busy then it got better of me so ordered a bedding kit from terminal ballistics and got to work.
first job was araldite 2 pot glue the rear long pillar into place, that done it was get stuck in with chisel and getrid of some wood....thought going well and re varnished inside before checking in with Nathan Foster (man who sells kits).."dont varnish" he said"let compuond mate with wood" so out with chisel and cleaned it all up again .
I also asked about removing wood from under recoil lug area and told to do so, so got really stuck in and gave it a good reeming out.

right..now the gaping hole in front of mag well was bugging me...to fit headless screw here or not was my next question??? do so and just plug hole with plastercene was answer but I was bugged by it...the hole is gaping 14mm with 8mm centre/bolt so wouldnt guide it at all really,looked in shed and found a wee pillar just the right size which you can see in above photo...I SHOULD HAVE done another trial fit with this Vs bottom metal pillar to get depth/height right as it turned out my "guestamite" was a bit off and it shouldve stuck up into cavity by 2-3mm.
nevermind we live n learn.
kit duely arrived and I mixed up the half kit we had saved from previous bedding job done on .270 (you not supposed to do this but Im a tight wad and had weighed quantities out very very very carefully to keep integraty of product)
poured the now custard like grey goo into cavity(the hole through pillar had tear drop of plastercene blocking it) drizzled a tad more on tight angles of action which had been well coated with release agent (kiwi boot polish and powdered graphite) then carefully slid action into place guided by both front and rear pillar holes with headless bolts fitted to action...had a wee panic moment as compound didnt quite come up sides of action then realised I hadnt pushed it firmly down and plastercene dams were holding it proud of where it should be sitting....hard down on the webbing in barrel channel which predetermined muti fitting had shown was right.
I then made 2nd poor decision and wiped off excess from above stockline...you should leave it proud to allow for settling and sand off any extra at end of job.
bungy was fitted,actually an elastic shearing belt. hot water bottles placed either side of stock and covered with towel and thick jacket.
two days wait then action was broken out of stock.

not the very best job but a heck of alot better than it was,she reassembled now and scope fitted leupold 4-12x40 vx1 in weaver clip over mounts..... hope to punch some holes in paper this weekend to see if it works of I need to rethink it and start again.

Good job mate...looks nice and solid. Ah, mistakes...it’s how we learn, with that in mind I reckon I should be the smartest guy on the block.

Looks good to me. I like the bedding of the recoil lug too. Many claim minimal contact is best...I firmly believe it should be bedded all the way. No possibility of shifting then. I am sure you are aware of this, but do make sure that the magazine body doesn't contact the stock anywhere. That can affect accuracy in weird ways.

cheers SSL ,the mag has a gap slightly more than hacksaw blade width between it and action NOW it was touching before and stock just sort of flopped around inbetween floorplate and action.... I can feed loaded rounds from mag into chamber piece of cake by pushing forward with finger tip so cant see any issues arriving when using bolt.....

Have done the same job on same brand but different caliber
Didn't/couldn't quite get it all lined up and had to take a bit off alongside the barrel channel to float it

I like doing this sort of thing and refinishing stocks
Its a bit disappointing when the job is finished
I believe it is another reason to buy another gun just to do a bit of work on it

my zastava .223 is nagging me from the gun safe...she is currently hot glue gun bedded and has been that way for nearly 18years.......

took the 223 apart,my hot glue gun job still looks primo Scratch

so I greased underside of action and put it back together Very Happy

went out to local deserted beach this morning and fired a few rounds into paper the .223 has projectile holes touching and .308 not much wider so sub inch and tidy clustering....Im happy with that Cool
