Hey Joe, another good varmit round we use out here in the Dakota's is the Horady 55 gr. v-max. Do a lot of long range shooting at P.Dogs and find the v-max to be very accurate in front of Varget powder through our Savages. Good shootin to you.

Hello Joe,

I see little difference in accuracy between the Nosler Bal. Tips in 50 and 55gr. weights, especially in my .22-250. I rarely load them up much beyong 3700fps though. I recently had to purchase a new Hart SS barrel for my .22-250 and boy they don't come cheap so I'm trying for a little longevity on this one. I use the Bal. Tips mainly for woodchuck. Best wishes.

I buy the Ballistic Tips in boxes of 250 and still go through a couple of boxes a year. I use them in a .222Rem., a .222Rem. Mag. and a .22-250 as well. They work superbly in all, regardless of whether it's the 50 or 55gr. I'm using. I'm impressed with the accuracy from these bullets. Best wishes.

Joe,
Just alittle bit more to add about the bullets. I have to agree that the Nosler ballistic tips are accurate. I use them in my hunting rifle and they perform excellent. The Noslers though are a boattail bullet. A lot of the reading I have done has indicated that shooting boattail bullets in large numbers can lead to early degrading of the rifle bore, caused by the escaping gas around the bullet due to the boattail design. For this reason I choose to use the very accurate V-Max, which I shoot in large quantities.
They are a flat base bullet design. till I learn more about bullet design, I'm going to stick with the flat base bullets in the guns I shoot alot. Just thought I'd pass on the info. Perhaps there are some real experts out there that have real definitive knowledge of bullet designs.

Hey Joe, I've been using the 50gr Speer 1340 in my 222's. They seem to work well (better in my Contender). Not sure how they would be in a 223 ... but it can't hurt to try.

By the way Joe, what is the twist in your Savage barrel going to be? It will determine how big a bullet weight you can shoot. I think some of them come with a 1 in 9" twist which would allow you to shoot heavier bullets. All of my .22 centerfires have a 1 in 14" twist so I'm pretty well limited to the 55gr. bullets and lighter, but you may do better than that if you have a faster barrel twist. Best wishes.

Howdy. Has anyone tried the combined technologys silver balistic tip in 50 or 55 grain ?. I have shot them in 7mm and was impressed with the accuracy was thinking of trying them for the 223.

First of all what are you planning to use the .223 for? Target, Varmint or Small/Small Medium game & Hides? If you are planning target I believe that you will be hard pressed to do much better than a 69gr HPBT that your rifle likes, my .223 loves Nosler CC 69gr. I get them in the 250 pack and they shoot into .250 sometimes less if I do my part. For small critters etc. I use the Hornady V-Max in 50 or 60gr. I also use th eNosler Partition 60gr for deer out here in North Carolina. **From a stand with selected shots. Its not the size but where you put it.** All of my loads will group .5 or less out to 250yd.

Others I've tried have been the Hornady 52 & 53 gr and they are very good, the best 10 shot group I have ever shot was at a BR Comp. with my Savage and Center to Center my group was .09", That upset a lot of dedicated BR Shooters that day. I've never reppeated that but have come close at .12" several times with the right conditions, I'm very happy with the .250" that I can nail almost every day I can go and do my part.

Best wishes and hope you find some that work out for you. Wink

Howdy. I kinda want a mixed bag target, fox, ground hog, coyote, i am not to worried about hides at this point. I realy like nosler bullets and was planning on working a load with the 60gr partition for bigger animals but for the smaller ones wanted to use 50 grain bullets. I realy like the standard balistic tip but was thinking of trying the ct balistic silver tip i have shot it in other calibers and rather like it

I love the nosler bullets but have had bad luck with the 40 and 50 grain bullets on coyotes. I shoot a 223 and shot 5 coyotes this year all hit right behind the shoulder. Only one dropped and it got back up and ran 250 yards before tumbling, the others all took off running and ran at least 150 yards before going down. I am going to try the hornady v-max's this year. My brother tells me the sierra blitzkings work good , I might try those also. I shoot the 100 grain nosler ballistic tips in my .257 weatherby with excellent results on deer.

I just joined the forum. Don't mean to come in late, but I have shot the 68 grain BTHP Hornaday out of my Savage (the Savage chamber has a long throat and seems to be made for the long 68 grain if you have the 1:9 twist) for about 5 years now, average group chronographed @ 3015 fps. Like I say, if you have the 1:9 twist, it might be worth your while to try. Do you like your Savage? I sure do like mine. There is a real nice after market trigger for around $100.00.

Howdy bigdog. I love my savage, so far i have shot the 50gr and 55gr nosler b-ts and have them both averageing in the .7s, i think it shoots better than i can shoot it. My savage has the accu trigger set at 2 1/2 pounds its a pretty nice trigger. I am thinking on trying the 60gr nosler partition next.

Hello Joe,

I use both the 50 and 55gr. Balistic Tips and don't see much difference between the two, either in accuracy or in killing ability. They both do the job nicely. A woodchuck isn't that hard to dispatch. Best wishes.

Be sure and post the results of your test with the 60 grain Noslers. I am shooting the 68 grain in great part because they are long enough for me to seat out to the rifleings (I'm shooting the single shot model). If the 60 grain Noslers are long enough to do the trick, I may be interested in trying them, am thinking about trying some Sierra 69 grain BTHP next now that I have all my cases fire formed.
