Speaking as a poor Brit, I envy you guys for the room, ability and freedom you have to just go off into the asshole of nowhere and blast just about anything that moves! Who OWNS your desert? Who OWNS your forest? In England, every square inch is owned by somebody and that person has to be found and their permission sought before you can even THINK about pulling a trigger. I live in London and last year I shot a pigeon out of a tree in my back garden - I got pissed with it crapping on my patio and washing. I dread to think of the trouble I could have gotten into if anyone had seen me and reported it. I could have had my firearm permit taken away in an instant - even though I didn't use my shotgun, just an air pistol. If I had used my air rifle it would have been better but pistols are illegal to use on anything. There are so many anti-gun laws here that ownership is a prized thing and it is so easy to lose your licence, you can't even sneeze with a gun in your possession. Say I want to shoot on someone's land. I have to go to them and ask if I can. This means two trips to the place - one to ask permission and another to go home and get my gun. If I go and ask with my gun locked in the back of my van, that is (in the eyes of the law) armed trespass - for which I could be given up to TEN YEARS in prison!! Ask first - shoot later! I also have a bow, a compound, but even though it is legal for me to carry it - it is TOTALLY illegal to shoot anything with it. Not even a RAT! Again, if I did use it - say, to take a rabbit - deep shit would descend with the force of the Gods. Another prison sentence in the offing. Aren't you glad you live on the right side of the pond? Well, enough bitching for now. Happy hunting guys.
Delboy.

Sorry to hear of the state of affairs regarding firearms in the Mother Country. Perhaps you should consider relocating to the Colonies. All the best...

Howdy. Glad it's not that way here as long as we keep the anti hunters in check we should be able to keep it that way. The NRA does a lot of work to keep our 2nd amendmant rights. I wouldn't want it any other way.

I cant even imagine what that would be like, I grew up in a place where you were born with a gun in your hand. And it didnt matter where you were shooting it as long as you were safe with it.
I think it is better this way because everybody around knows how to properly handle a gun. I hope nothing like that happens out here where I am. Embarassed

We should all listen very carefully to dellboy. If the Kennedys, Clintons, Shuemers and the like have their way, we could be relating the same woes in a few years. There are a lot of folks in this country that would prefer to have it the same way here. We all need to listen and learn. Every small "chink" however small it seems, is leading us down that path and the doors that close behind us will never be reopened. To paraphrase Charlton Heston...."You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hands."

Welcome to the site delboy. I agree with the others that as kindred hunter spirits, we wish it could be better for you. While we do enjoy alot more freedom with respect to hunting and shooting, we still have our own issues that need keeping special watch over.

My suggestion, save up $$$ and come to the states on a Deer or Elk hunt. Want something puesdo-exotic you could probably do Caribou fairly reasonable.

Do they have hunting / shooting clubs over there you can join to increase your enjoyment of the sport?

Hi Dallan. Yeah, for a mere $2000 and a 1000 mile round trip I can have the opportunity of shooting at a stag. Cost is the same, hit it or not!
One thing I AM glad of though, have just found out from our erstwhile government that gun crime has increased only (?) 10% over the last twelve months - thank God they took all our handguns away. At least it's only the CRIMINALS that are doing it. That comforts me no end. Sad

Howdy. I never did understand that concept Confused . There was murder long before there were guns a criminal will use whatever means is available to them If someone kills another person while drunk driving they put HIM in jail and take away HIS right to drive not your's or mine. If they tried CONVICTING criminals and PUTING them in jail and KEEPING them in jail i would think gun crimes would decrease. If you have a mouse problem in your house and you start setting traps before long your mouse problem is gone. Goverments need to focus on the problem CRIME and CONVICTION!!!!
sorry this subject gets me goin!!

Just as an aside - I regularly visit South Africa and, a couple of years back, I went to the Addo Elephant Park which is just north of Port Elizabeth. I spotted a sign on the gate which had me falling about! Laugh? The tears ran down my leg! It stated that anyone caught with explosives would be faced with a fine of up to R1000 (£100). Well slap my leg and call me stupid, but this seemed a good deal to me! Coming from a country that will give you five years in jail for being in possession of an unlicenced .22 rimfire ROUND - YES, 1 bullet - being able to wander abroad with a pound or two of Dynamite or Semtex incurring the same penalty as a parking ticket in London seems a fair risk to take. Anyone out there know any good recipes for minced Pachyderm???

MOUNT it????????????? Isn't that illegal??? He'd have to be careful that he didn't fall off the ladder! Brings a whole new meaning to the term "Could be put up for it"............... At least over here we only have to worry about sheep and wellington boots in Wales! :))
