Apparently it was a nasty..7.2 just off the east coast of the North Island...Radar's stomping ground. I haven't seen any news yet as I've been out, but the little bits I've heard say all is ok, very minor damage and no injuries.

the last few days there are a few shaky shaky in Northern Australia as well.
not too large 4 + on the scale.

I guess there are some pressure built up that are being released.

That's what happens when you live on the "Ring of Fire".
The one that concerns me is the Cascadia Subduction zone. When it goes, and it is overdue, the West coast from Northern California to Southern British Columbia will be a disaster zone. All the major highways will be impassable, the bridges are more likely to fail than survive, the major airports will be out of commission, petroleum, water and natural gas lines will be broken. Any help will have to be by helicopter and with over two million people out of food, water, heat and transportation is will be a grizzly sight. They are guessing that it will be over two years before any of the infrastructure can be repaired and a full recovery will likely take decades.

It's just one of the reasons I moved to SE Washington.

Glad to hear everyone is ok.

I like to be prepared for emergencies. Years back I sat down and figured out what the most realistic, worst case scenario might be where I live. The answer I came up with would be a moderate / major earthquake in the middle of winter. Power and probably natural gas lines would be broken, which means no heat. From there, I figured up what I would need to keep alive during that period of time (alternate fuels ie: propane / wood, generators for power, gas for generators etc etc).

I hope it isnt ever needed, but I like to think we could survive a few weeks without much effort.

Paul,
You forgot the mega volcano under Yellowstone.
When that goes, it will fix global warming for quite some time.
Will make Mt St Helens look like a fire cracker.
If it holds out another 50 years it won't be our problem.......

Enough gas in my trucks tank to go somewhere else.

California and Yellowstone...Yellowstone in particular. I've looked at all the models for both possible events and it is Yellowstone that has the potential to not only be devasting in its local effect, but will impact on vast areas of the US and also to a lesser extent the world. Very nasty.

Normally thats smart... but in my scenario, if it was stormy enough the roads might not be passable. I've seen 16" of snow dropped per night for 5 days straight. Piled snow over 14' high with the tractor clearing our driveway growing up. UDOT does amazing work clearing roads in the winter but a major earthquake during a major storm might make travel impossible.

Yellowstone is far enough east that in prevailing winds I will have one or two years before it has much local effect. If it is a super eruption it will be a catastrophe for the entire northern hemisphere and not just the USA.
Consider how you can survive in a world without sunlight for five to ten years. Ground transportation will be locked in feet of ash and air transportation will be dangerous at best. If we could all catch a flight south in the first thirty minutes or so we could emigrate to Australia and stand a good chance of surviving. Any place north of the equator is going to be experiencing 5 to 10 years of winter that will approximate an ice age complete with glaciation.

It's going to be a very bad time. The worst part is that there are super volcanoes in both hemispheres so there is really no safe place on earth. There was an extinction event that was caused by two of the smaller super volcanoes in Russia and Africa within a year of each other. If mother nature wants to take us out there isn't much we can do about it.
