I have seen some nice bucks on my trail cams but one stuck out. I got a good picture in early october and was hoping to see him bow hunting but duck hunting took over and I didn't get out bow hunting again. He came in and visited me this morning and now he resides in my fridge. I shot him with my 6.5 Grendel and am impressed at the power that little cartridge has. It knocked him down but he got back up and made it another yards.

wiersy, Congrats! A great start for you 6.5G. What bullet did you use? What range? Thanks for the pictures, they make all the difference.

Thanks guys, this is a memorable buck.

Slim I used the Hornady 123gr Amax sitting over 26grs of IMR 8208. He was only about 50 yards away when I slapped him and he only went about maybe another 20 yards before his time expired. Masive internal bleeding in the chest, not much of a blood trail but he basically ran out of blood while drowning in it. I do think I may use Hornady 123gr SST's for hunting next year, or a Nosler in the same weight class.

Very nice Wiers I always wondered how the 6.5 would do on deer (considering building one or a 300 AAC). Looks like it stopped his clock very well!

Very cool, very nice buck. When does the rutt start down there? His neck looks swollen. I really need to go hunt Whitetails someday.

Dallan
He was the first buck I saw in rut when I got his picture on the 5th of October. That seemed very early to me, normally it starts around the end of October/ beging of November. I went and looked at the camera by my bow stand today and there was a small six point standing around there for about a half hour during the tiime I shot and gutted the big fella. My bow stand is only about 100 yards from where I was.

Suz
In my opinion the 6.5 Grendel is a superior caliber then the 300 AAC. It is a way more vrsitle round with far superior ballistics. I might build a 300 but mainly for plinking but maybe short range hunting.

A 5.56 is much better for plinking. There are better option than the .300 BO for hunting including your 6.5G. Suz, I would suggest your money would be better spent elsewhere. Savaged cancelled the .300 BO it planned to release. A lot of prior .300 BO shooters have come over to the 6.8mm SPC II (58,000 psi). The 6.8mm is number 2 in sales and the number 1 hunting cartridge for the AR platform. The 6.8 has too many good hunting bullets to count.

Slim I forgot you were a 6.8 guy, I already have a 5.56, and was thinking of building a .300 BO upper because I have a ton of 5.56 brass and could convert some. Eventually I plan on a 6.8 but not in the near future. I just don't see the .300 BO being a good reliable hunter. I think at the limited short range that I shot this nice fella the .300 BO would work but in my opinion anything over 100 would be out of the question.

Thing I like about the 300 Blackout is it handles relatively heavy bullets easily and when pushed at moderate velocities, they have a lot of energy...a bit like being smacked in the face with an egg slide/spatula Mad or a shovel. Mad burr
