So I went to the range to verify my rifles I'll be using, the Envoy, and the Marlin (that before today was never shot).

The Envoy worked out well, and even with my unsteady hands I think it grouped well. The picture is pre-final zero (100 yards) when I decided to take a group.

The Marlin, shoots far too high, appears to have been zeroed at Factory either for very slow 30-30 ammunition, or the front sight is too low (I think?). The gun was shooting far too high, even with the rear sight all the way down. The way it's currently shooting I've got a either 250 or 300 yard zero since when I first tried it at 50 yards I was 12-14 inches high.

That's certainly "Minute of Critter" mate. Some people get all twisted around the axle if they don't get a "benchrest" size group from their hunting rifle, whereas the kill zone on an animal that us dog size of larger is fairly generous. A rifle that will shoot 2" groups at 100yds will still be in the kill zone at 300yds if the shooter does his bit.

I shot that group on the bench, but not supported by a rest. I'm more then happy with it. Very Happy

I spent today as the range safety officer while the range was open to the public for "pre-hunting sight-in".
I can honestly say that most of the deer are in little danger if this is a sample of the general hunting public. Group sizes that were over 5" were the norm and that at 25 yards! There were lots of targets that were left on the back board without a hole in them at all.

Tomorrow is another opertunity to see how the "hunters" are shooting.

I think I'll take my -06 out with me to see if I can hit anything ewith it after 8 years of no use.

I take it the marlin is a 30/30????
try highland ammo its slow or better still take ramp for rear sight out completely..we did with mates .44mag Rossi to fix that very same issue.
heard a good one to raise front sight the other day..glue a piece of flouro weed eater/whippersnapper cord on top of it.

Mate has one and it sure shoots high with new fandangled hornady flexitip stuff, the Highland seems to be a short range load..great for bailed pigs or close up. shoots a lot lower.

HAha that looks like my target stand, its about 15 layers of older targets. I always just tape on a new one over the top of the previous ones. Eventually I just throw the entire thing away and start over. Post Election time is a great time to gather up some of those voting advertisement boards with the wire frame that you push into the ground... fantastic target backings.

Yep, that'll work!

I have a .50 cal muzzleloader thats the same way. Rear sight is screwed down as tight as I can but its still a tad high. Been looking for a 1/8" lower front sight but I cant find any that would work Sad

There are commercial "lumo" sights available for shotguns that come with a dedicated carrier for the optic fibre sight. I have one fitted to my O/U shotgun and it works a treat. The kit usually comes with three different colours...orange, yellow and green.
