Too many Coyotes

I need to reduce the coyote population around here and am thinking of buying a FOXPRO® Wildfire 2 Predator Call to help bring them in. Anybody have any experience with this model or Fox Pro. The smallest caliber I have is .270 I expect this will do the job, any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Les, I know FoxPro has a good reputation but I haven't tried one myself. If I had any time off I'd volunteer to help! I do have an AR looking for something to do.

I would reload some 110 grain hp hornady flat base projectiles and see if the cannon will group them for you, I used them on wallabies (similar body size) and found if I could hit em they were down for good...one heck of a mess with big jellied hole always about 4" across and 12" deep sort of a 2ltr coke bottle sized area...wouldnt be best if you wanted the pelts but should take care of minor errors in aim without chancing a wounding. a good soft 130 worked well for me as well, old school silver tips were pick of bunch but budget P.M.C. werent far behind
you could try baiting for them????somewhere you can see from shooting bench inside house/barn so all you need to do is quietly open window/door and shoot.

Hey Lester, Pumpkin Here's a great sittin at home with nuthin to do project. I made one of these for a friend of mine's son who loved it to terrorize the neighborhood with. There's free down-loadable calls too. Can't tell if the link is the right page but at the top menu just hit El-Cheapo electronic caller. You might have some of the parts or be able to substitute what you have on hand. I had a tiny mp3 player that I used and a Radio Shack speaker with a small amp and headphone jack, it worked great.

Give the Hornady 110 gr V-Max a try. I've used quite q few of them in my rifles. They shoot fine and get about 3500 + fps. I'd better check my records before we call that one a fact though. My 50 year old memory deceives me at times. They have always done quite a number on jack rabbits and such.

The 270 should work well. I've used mine on crows on the small side to deer on the large size all with 130 grain bullets (Remington Core-Lokt).

I believe how well coyotes respond to predator calls depends in part on how good the food supply is. The food supply being good right now, it would probably be harder to bring them in. I've never had success in calling in coyotes in Ohio.

Coyotes tend to be most active from around dusk until early morning hours. If you know where they tend to come out, sit there and wait during those hours and you should be able to whack them.

Taken from my front porch with a 243 Winchester about 8:30 AM.

110 grain Vmax is the best expanding varmint bullet you can get for the 270. I have tested them all in my 6.8mm

Sierra #1800 90gr HP.

Silly velocities are possible & they're very flat shooting. Consistently sub MOA even with my moderate ability.

I've used those before-explosive by nature on soft skinned critters-[b]WOW-from 270 win.

Hornady 110 HP, 2350 fps
Sierra 90gr HP, 2050 fps
Hornady 110 Vmax, 1750 fps

Guess I am getting in on this thread a bit late…been a while since I pulled up a chair here. I have owned two different FoxPro callers

They are good machines, however, it is like buying John Deere machinery, you are paying for the green paint, or in the case of the FoxPro, the name. They are definitely the 800 pound gorilla in the e-caller game.

The downside to the FP callers is that they have their own file designation, and will only play FoxPro sounds in their format, UNLESS you have a computer engineering degree and figure out how to get other sounds to play.

I switched to a Kanati Tek caller, www.kanatitek.com, and have found the sound is just as good, and the caller uses a jump drive and will play sounds in the MP3 format.

Jeff Lewis owns Kanati Tek, and is a predator caller himself. He had a relationship at one time with Les Johnson from Predator Quest. Les is an acquaintance of mine, and is how I was introduced to Jeff and the Kanti Tek company and callers.

I have not been disappointed with my machine.

The good thing about calling coyotes is that keeping it simple works just as fine, too. These days, every one with an e-caller is a coyote caller, and the coyotes are somewhat call shy to common distress sounds.

A $7.99 Tally Ho open reed caller works for great distress sounds, and a person can do some great coyote vocalizations with it as well.

As far as the gun—I never could get 100 or 110 grain bullets to shoot well enough in my .270 to warrant messing with it. A good shoulder shot with a 130 grain soft point will be like hitting them with the hammer of Thor and not have to deviate much from your deer load.

and played it back on a battery operated MP4 player, but find the cheap button type fox whistle does just as well for foxes here in Oz.
