No he's my brother and he has been loading the same round for the last twenty years or so. We pulled one of the bullets and weighed the powder. The one we pulled had 17.4 grains and the bullet was 140 Speer JHP.
I think it may have been a reloading error - he admitted that the one we pulled was from a more recent loading session. It might have been a chronograph error too, but we are going to run more through the chronograph and see what we get from his newer loads.

Have you tried another chronigraph?
It seems unlikely you can load a 357 to 800 fps above the norm without wearing parts of the gun in your dial.

No, I only have one chronograph but it properly measured the 22 ammo before my brothers reloads and my reloads after the first five of his and both strings of his at five shots each were 2300+ feet per second.

My 22s: 1208 fps
My brother's first string in his gun: 2300+
my loads in my brother's gun: 1300+
my brothers loads in his gun: 2300+

I find it hard to believe that an aberration can be that selective.
I also find it hard to believe that there was only 17.4 grains of H110 in his loads. (unfortunately we have no more from that batch to check and his current loads are 17.4 grains of H110 which is what he "always" loads).
My loads were 18.0 grains of H110, reduced from my normal load so I can shoot them as my back continues to heal. My "normal" load is 19.1 grains of H110 with the same 140 grain bullet.

I think we are going to end up calling this one "f-ing magic" and move on. I just wanted to share the mystery with you guys to see if we could come up with an explanation that would fit.
