blog.solidconcepts.com...metal-gun/
The gun is 3D Printed in its whole, the only non printed parts are the springs.
Shoots 45ACP at 20Kpsi pressure.
Whats incredible is that the barrel rifling is also printed.
This would change the way things are made soon.

I wonder how much a metal printer, and the software to run it, costs.
You could probably fill your safe with guns for less.

I may have seen the same program. Guy used a plastic 3-D printer to make the parts for an artificial hand for his son? Pretty darned neat. That printer runs around $2,500 (plastic only) according to the show. They said he keeps improving the hands and plans to design and manufacture for other kids with disabilities. Wish him all the best.

That was a pretty slow shooting gun but it was a metal one. I'm surprised it was stainless, as that was my first question, how do they get to print metal. I can understand plastic but metal must be an even slower process than plastic to build little tiny layers of. At $500,000 for the machine that's one expensive handgun. At least they did it, and what the future brings in that technology will be mind blowing. Can't wait till someone in England or Australia buys one of those printers, boy will he be in for a spin.

They use Lasers to melt / deposit metal in layers. Takes more energy, more time but the result is pretty cool.
Wait till super strong epoxy resin's are used in this process... you could make a whole engine out of them super cheap, super fast.

I'm curious about the finish work !!!
Was there a need to hand finish the parts to make things work together.
What about the hammer and sear.
They stated there was no machining and they have finishers that are wonderful but they didn't give any details.
Love to be able to sit in a room with these guys and just listen to the conversation !!!

I have a lot of prototype componets made with 3-D printers but we use plastic almost all the time. We can make small stainless parts also. We tried going to an outside source to get some metalic control grips made but the cost was prohibited - $10,000. Even the plastic parts aren't that cheap. If you have to have large quanities, molds and injection are the way to go.

Whatever you call it, this technology would make them stupid politician and the antis have headaches.
Ban them all to stop crime? yip, them crims would simply print more, just like they already did print funny money, credit cards, IDs and gun licenses.
