Anyone recieve the"handloader" magazine???There is a very good article on page 50 in the April issue. For those that persist in feeling that they need one of the newer calibres need to read this article and reconfer with their load data manual...It seems that the .30-06 (the calibre that ALL .30 calibre chamberings and a few others are compared to) is very much alive and very well...Anyone else have any comments on this? Feel free to bash (bash is probably the wrong word here, but wtf ) the venerable cartridge that has lasted 100 years and still is one of the most used chamberings (7.62 X 63) of the WORLD...

No bashing here........... Smile I have a 30-06 and it gets used every year. It's a great cartridge and easy to load for. I agree it's one of the best ever produced. I even have an offspring from the 30-06, the 25-06, another great cartridge. Smile

List your rifle and the off spring of the .30-06 that you might have...

Mine? Browning A-Bolt Hunter/Redfield 3 X 9 Compact

I agree with you good folks. I have used a .30-06 since the late 1950s and never felt undergunned. I have quite a few .30-06s and .270s, .280s and have a 338-06 barrel that needs to be fitted to a 1903-A3 sporter. Great cartridge and good for another century. All the best...

I also have a couple of .06's that get used at least once a year, a Mauser and an Eddystone.--tr

If or when I do get another high powered gun, it is going to be a 30-06.

I had my heart set on a M1-Grand, After looking at the reloading books. I think it would be better and more efficiant to get a 30-06 Springfield.

the 30-06 was going to be my next gun. but I wanted a savage 10FP 223. since I already have a 30-30.

i see no problems with a 30-06 bolt action. and hope to be a proud owner of one some day.

Bushmaster has targeted one of my favorite subjects. While the '06 has always been a good round, today's higher tech powders and bullets allow it to achieve what was considered magnum performance levels of two decades ago. "Handloaders" John Barsness is a champion of standard cartridges for hunting and has been ringing that bell in many of his articles in that magazine and its sister publication "Rifle".

I have several 06s, but, by favorite is a pre64 FWT. It has a 22" barrel and will send 180gr TSX bullets downrange with a MV of 2,910fps. Twenty years ago, I was pleased to get 2,775fps.

Since practical and ethical hunting ranges are usually under 350yards, the "new" 30-06 makes many of the magnum cartridges obsolete. Imagine that! A 100 year old cartridge obsoleting such silly rounds as the 300WSM and old favorities such as the 300 Win or Weatherby Magnums.

Now that we have established how great those standard rounds are, next we may even rediscover how much better fixed power scopes are. Maybe?

I'm beginning to like this guy "Handloader" more and more.. Very Happy ..And I, also, have seen much improved velocities for this cartridge...Although I haven't tried any as I am quite happy with the 2500 to 2800 fps speeds that my various hunting loads are doing now...And it saves barrels...

I gotta agree with Bushy, here.
There is nothing much on the planet that hasn't been taken successfully by the '06, and the other old standards. You NEED more gun? That's why the .375 H&H and the. 416 Rigby were invented. The '06 did just fine before the new powders and bullet designs arrived, but they only make a good cartridge better.

Only two problems with some of the higher powered spin offs of the .30-06 is a. Do we really need them? And b. With the higher powered .30 calibre rifle cartridges people that couldn't hit with a .22 at range think that the new magnum cartridges will improve their ability to hit out at extreme ranges...Worrisum....

First centrefire rifle I ever took hunting was a sporterised Mauser in 30.06. Brilliant cartridge. Recoil is a little stiff (I was using European surplus military rounds) , but certainly not beyond what the average shooter could handle. Have fired many thousands of rounds through the Browning .30 calibre machine gun and love it.

I don't own one and probably never will because my .243 and 30.30 cover any of the hunting I do, however I still agree that it is an awesome calibre.

Cheers, Vince

I don't have an '06 but someone is always writing its praises. I've heard of people switching to the 7mm for a flatter shooting gun but that was with factory loads. What are your thoughts?

What little shooting I've done has been with my 1895G 45-70 or my 50 cal. in-line. Also have a Rem 700 in .270 and one of the Mitchel Mauser 8mm, that I haven't shot yet. Gil told me what it was, I think A48.

It seems I would only be "preaching to the choir" by entering my feelings on my favorite rifle.
