Don't knock lycra, its the best thing for doing exercise in. Running, rowing, cycling...hell man even the All Blacks wear lycra. I won't post me in my gears though, y'all might be reaching for a bucket!

Im a recreational rower, I both sweep and skull. Ive only been in a single once and I didn't fall out, my wife and I can skull together now that we've established who is in the stroke seat - ME. We usually row 4s and 8s but we have skulled Octiples as well. I'm starting my National umpires ticket this year and then may look at an international ticket depending.
My best time on an erg over 2Km is 6.58 - that was a while ago. But I can still do 10km in about 40 min.

Still young and fit I see. I have found its better for the experienced stronger rower to be in the bow. Its much easier to control the boat, coach, and to stay in sync with the stroke. Speed on the water is all about power, grace, and balance. Grace being technique. You can't work on your technique unless you have balance and it does no good to add power if your technique isn't correct. Balance isn't much of an issue in doubles, but if technique isn't good and both rowers are not in-sync, the boat doesn't move well or run out (thus a lower speed).
Guys, think the strong one needs to be in stroke. Watch how much faster your double is if you put your wife in stroke and slow the return down to let the boat run out.
Hey, best wishes on your refereeing. As soon as my knee mends, I may get to get the pleasure of following me down the course.
