Well the day started out good, when I got to my blind I was being watched. I could see at least 5 sets of eyes in the brush. They really didn't seem to concerned with me, I never heard them leave so I know they weren't spooked. It was pretty cool seeing al those eyes glowing in the dark. About 7am I looked up and a fawn appeared before my eyes. The grass in front of me was less then knee high and it was tickling the fawns belly, pretty small. At that point I had high hopes for the day, the weather was turning cold the wind was supposed to come up but only 15 to 20 mph. Well about 9am it seemed to be a little stronger then predicted. I was just glad I was on the ground. I came out about 10am am listened to the radio and they reported 30 to 35 mph with gusts over 40. I tried going for a walk about and about got blown over. It seemed like everyone that was hunting out there was out driving around. I headed in for coffee and pretty much every one had the same idea. With 40* and heavy wind I just called it a day.

Good one Stovie.

With winds like that, evern the deer would bed down and call it a day. Thanks for the update, wiersy. When are you going out again?

our deer dont like wind at all so hunting out of the wind on lee sides of hill is a good bet. it can work in your favour by crossing out a heap of area.

Ack- I hate blow outs. Have that issue here too. Sustained 20-25 with gusts to 40 and beyond. Stuff hunkers down and won't flush or fly. Cool story man. Love the wee-one's about.

I like wind for dove-hunting. It keeps the doves low and helps to predict their flight. They come in against the wind and once they see you, turn, accelerate faster than a Ferrari and then 'Misses TANK' would be to heavy to swing fast enough to get them...
And you need the wind to keep some decoys moving since we are no longer allowed to use the pigeon magnet or other mechanically driven things.

But for roedeer only a little wind will do. No wind at all will spread your scent anywhere, a little wind just in 1 direction, strong wind makes the game to much afraid to leave the cover.

So when you need deer and there is much wind, go look for them inside the cover and use the wind in your advantage.

Temperatures have plummeted in the last couple of days, a scan of my local honey holes shows me the local ducks are starting tho pull out. So I will chase fur with the bow until the northern ducks start showing up. I have permission to hunt an 80 acre patch that is right behind my house so I will go set my stand up tomorrow morning and see it I can stick one.

Mad if ya don't Wiersay. I can't imagine hunting ducks with a bow. I take it you target them before they take to the wing?

Cheers, Vince

Vince, never seen them doing it on flying ducks? They put a washer on the point of the arrow to prevent shooting completely trough the duck.
There is always somebody who's enough nut to try and do something amazing...
can you imagine such a guy with his bow standing next to you shooting clays?
I think "embarassing" is the word Smile

I've had guys out-shoot me on the the pistol range using a bow...but only out to 50 metres. One thing I'll never do is underestimate the abilities of a good bowman.

Aloys...not sure if you are having a lend of me mate, but no, I've never heard of the washer trick to shoot ducks mate.

I've seen a guy shooting clays with a pistol, and I've shot them with a .410...but a bow, now that would be something to see.

Cheers, Vince

I am sure a good instinctive shooter can do it.
