I have been wanting to get some sierra 125gr hp or speer 130gr fn to load for my daughter for hunting. She is 11 and the 30-30 packs a pretty good wallop for someone her size. I remembered yesterday that I have some speer 130gr varminters and I was thinking that as long as I don't load her up with more than 2 of them at time (one in the chamber and one in the tube) it would probably serve my purpose. Does anyone have an openion on that?

As long as no more than 2 pointed bullets are loaded at a time,(1 in chamber, 1 in mag) go for it.

Another thing you can do to help the younger shooters is to buy a slip on Limbsaver recoil pad which can be had for under $50.00. Even the walmart here has the winchester brand of slip on limbsavers.

They should be OK for practice but personally I wouldn't use a bullet designed for varmints on deer, etc.

I have the limbsaver brand limbsaver on the gun already. I will most likely just buy the 130gr fn speer bullets and call it good.

Whats your load data for the 30-30? I know trail boss powder is a redused power load for less kick. It would still take a deer.
from the IMR site:
30-30 WINCHESTER
Case: Winchester Twist: 1:12"
Barrel: 24" Trim: 2.030" Primer: Winchester LR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bullet: 160 GR. CAST LFN Dia. .308" COL: 2.485"
Trail Boss 6.5 997fps 20,500 CUP 9.0 1195fps 29,100 CUP

The 130 grain Speer HP is a varmit bullet but (BIG BUT) it works great on deer if neck shots are used. If the velocity is held below 2600 fps then you can use them for broadside vital shots but not through the shoulder. My brother and I have used them very successfully in the past from 308 and 3006 at 2800 and 2990 fps respectively. Neck shots and just below the ear drops them in their tracks. Front on heart and lung shots are almost as deadly with the animals stumbling no more than a few feet or dropping where they stand.

good call PaulS my big bro used them for years in his BLR .308 on mostly sika deer with great results. he did however use a more hefty load during the roar/rut period. I have thought about loading these in the 7.62x39 case aswell as they should work well at the slower speed.
there is no reason you couldnt put regular/ flat nosed loads in the magazine and just the one pet load in the chamber

I have loaded a number of different projectile weights in my Model 94 30.30, all with success.

I have loads using:
Sierra 110 gn Hollow Point designed for the .30 M1 Carbine,
125 gn Hollow Point (Hornady I think...it's been a while now),
Winchester 150 gn Power Point PPFN designed for the 30.30
Cast 150 gn GC Flat Nose from a RCBS mould, and
cast 170 gn GC Flat Nose (from an unknown mould) a mate gave me.

They all shoot well, with the jacketed boolits producing the smaller groups.

I was unsure about the viability of the 110 gn bullets, but they have proven to be very effective on light skinned animals like kangaroos...and have quite reduced recoil.

I would have to dig out my load data for these bullets, but all use ADI/Thales powders. The 110 gn and 125 gn loads used AR 2206 from memory and the larger bullets use AR 2208 (Varget).

Looking at the ADI Powder Equivalents Chart, AR2206 is close to Hogdon BLC(2) and AA2230 and is a little quicker than Winchester W748. Stepping up as the replacement for AR2206 is AR2206H which is sold in the US as H4895 and IMR4895.

A little research will provide you with heaps of load data using lighter bullets for this magnificent round.

Cheers, Vince

Thats all good information. I do not shoot deer through the shoulder so I figure that the 130gr speer hp should do just fine. I am teaching my daughter how to hunt the way I do so unless she slips up there will be no shots made that need to pass through bone and muscle to hit the vitals. I do like the idea of using the pointed bullets in the chamber and having fn bullets as backup in the tube. Thanks all for the info.
