Anyone on here load for one of these? If so... need alot of guidance. Not new to reloading BUT what I am doing with this cartridge is kinda new for me.

Basically taking a Stock case and cutting it down to the same length as the chamber and loading like a conventional revolver round because I cannot figure out how to do the crimp they do on the factory rounds to make them seal up in the forcing cone of the barrel. So I cut it down and resized with a .30carb die set and seated a .308 bullet over the top of 2gr of HP38. From what I am seeing in the book these should work without too much trouble. But wanna get some more info before I totally commit to this project and keep the gun running without the goofy shells it uses.

Thanks guys.

dont know about this round but a factory crimp is easy peasy you only need to not back the die out when seating the bullet for the .270 or .223 to get it to crimp have a look in your loading manual for the" how to" on this.

That will give you a roll crimp Elvis. A Factory Crimp is a bit different in that it is applied with a collect set up. Check out LEE Factory Crimp dies on the net mate.

Factory Crimp Die

I no longer use a roll crimp...works the case mouth too much and causes the mouth to split prematurely.

I've heard and seen the 7.62x38R but not the 7.62x28R, a shooting buddy of mine use to reload his 38R by using 32.20 cases and fire forming them. His biggest gripe was crimping the case as the bullet was completely inside the case.

Looks like you are correct It is a 38r not a 28r Could have sworn I saw it listed as the 28r Oh well. YEap! THAT is my main problem! The dang crimp! But now I see that bullet is not being held in place correctly so that tells me I need to have the case squeezed a bit tighter.

How did he get the crimping done? I think I am going to have to YouTube this! HA HA HA!!! Girlfriend says you can find out how to do most anything on YouTube! HAHAHA!!!!

And yes this a VERY strange round!!!!! But it is pretty neat to shoot! And my revolver has a decent D/A trigger pull I would estimate it around 10 or 11pounds. Not too bad for a revolver made in 1944 Russia.

Arron, don't forget the origin of this revolver, Mr. Nagant lived in a period that we were still allowed to make guns and when we were rather good in doing this. So your revolver can be made in Russia, but was invented in Belgium...

and you might want to try the 32 S&W Long... and when you want that crimp in the middle of the case, maybe search how they do this with a wadcutter?

Maybe you can use Lee FCD for similar neck size, with a sleeve or something to push in the crimping part.
I used to use a 308W FCD to crimp my 300 Whisper, simply use a lifting jig to lift the cartridge to the correct height.

I sent my shooting buddy an e-mail yesterday and got a reply back.

Quote:
"The dies that rcbs makes are made to use with 7.62x38r nagant revolver brass. At $160.00 they are very pricey, you will also have to special order a shellholder for $20.00 plus shipping. the RCBS #1 works, the Lee #6 works with the Starline brass you can also use a 7.62X54R shell holder with the 7.62X54R case cut down to the rim and primer pocket drilled out to fit the Nagant case and rim {lathe work}....a cast 100gr. bullet sized to .311 works good in mine......

I tried to size 7.62x38r brass with a set of LEE dies made for forming from .32-20 brass and didn't have much luck. Initially, the gun wouldn't accept .32-20 brass because the rims were too thick. I ended up modifying the gun so it would work with .32-20 brass. I loaded a .314" HBWC over 2.7gr. of bullseye for a very mild plinking load. You could probably use a .32 cal. JHP and increase the charge a little, but I would'nt push it too much. The ammo I loaded functions fine and gives so-so accuracy. The goal was just to be able to shoot the gun, and the desired results have been achieved. Loading data for this cartridge is not too plentiful. I ended up selling the gun an dies last year as it was just to much of a hasle to load for as case life was very short."

A LEE No. 19 will work if you hit it with a diamond bit in Dremel a couple times.

I have shot some .32S&WLongs in it and they are OK BUT some of the cases DO go into the chamber and it sounds sorta goofy and "not right" when it goes off. HA HA!! But the cases came out fine and showed no signs of obvious problems. I am going to try a FCD in .30Caliber and this will be something I can use anyways as I have a 7.5MAS and a .308Win. I know I like the "odd-balls" you could say it is from my childhood growing up and killing my fisrt coyote outright with a M99 Savage in .250Savage! I love my Quarter BORES!!!!!

Thanks for the information guys It does help out.

And I would CERTAINLY say Nagant was a DAMNED IMPRESSIVE designer of small arms! One of the MAJOR world powers has been using two of his designs , along with it's satellite nations and influenced nations, for over 100 years
and THAT is impressive to say the least.
