Since the original question also asked how our species compare to european species, our elk (depending on sub species) would be the same as a scandanavian moose or a red deer. Aprox 1 to 2 meters high at the shoulder, somewhere between 200 and 400 kilos on the hoof.

The funny thing is how much one species will vary across the country. In Texas (where my brother in law is from) a White Tail Deer that weighs 60 to 80 kilos is huge. While here in Wyoming, average is about 100 to 120 kilos. Go into Canada and you start running into ones that are even larger yet. Mule Deer are even larger, most of the ones I have shot over the last 25 years have been in the 110 to 150 Kilo range.

The one game species I see everyone left out, most likely because it is not a Deer, are North American Pronghorn. More commonly "Antelope". These are actually not a true antelope, but are more closely related to goats. However, with their sharp eyesight and a top speed of 60 mph, they are a challenge to hunt.

I know Kansas is known for some trophy deer but you would be surprised how small deer are on the Eastern side of the state, especially in the suburban Kansas City area. You get outside the metro area and you are easily 30% bigger in gross weight.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of big deer in Kansas. The mule's are west and the bigger whitetails are southwest or northwest of Kansas City.

Same with Missouri. Good deer are in the North, little ones in the south. In my experience a good 30% smaller in the southern part of the state.

Confused Having harvested Blacktail in Alaska & California I may have harvested a smaller subspecies but they were much smaller than many of the Whitetail I have harvested. Are not the Blacktail smaller than Whitetail, my largest Whitetail dressed out at 307 pounds in the UP of Michigan near Whitefish Bay and my second largest was 286 pounds dressed from Minnesota. I have only got one Mule a nice 4x4 he wnet 315 and my largest Blacktail was 165. How about anyone else. Cool
