Hi all,
I went to my Firearms Qualification shoot and we've just got new simulators. It's like playstation but only bigger better and faster. We can do scenarios using all our tactical options O/C Spray, Taser and both firearms so we can escalate and deescalate our response. The firearms cycle like normal excepting the bang is well understrength. Its realistic and full size, can't wait for the 3D version which I'm sure is in the pipeline.
Passed my qualification no problem; not that I've ever failed but do do armed vehicle stops and escalated kidnappings, enraged people etc is bloody good fun. Its realistic if you cock it up and the bad guy gets one on you, you know about it learn from it but you can't get hurt. Just opens your eyes how far technology has come.
We started with arcade type shooting; falling plates just as a warm up then went to scenarios then our qualification. No bullshit, no mucking about just good fun.
we had to do some operator assessments while we were waiting, Yawn. But once inside the zone Fun Fun Fun. Can't wait until next time. The two instructors are like kids - they were showing us their best arcade scores etc. I want one for home.

Good post Radar, my next door neighbor and shooting, hunting buddy told me his department got one of those simulators and had to share with the sheriffs department. Police chief says thats all fine and dandy as long as you shoot the real things at target practice once a month.

And I told him what is better than recoil therapy?

The only problem with live shooting is that its a paper target, it doesn't move or react or even present a challenge, but I hear you. Tell your mate we only get qualifications every 6 months....thats it.
Its alright for a regular shooter like myself but some of my staff only pick up a firearm during emergencies....not enough practice I say.

My son was in a Police explorers unit when he was in college and they let them do the simulation. The scenario he ran was a call to an office where a disgruntled employee had the manager held hostage at gunpoint. In the simulator the 'bad guy' steps into the hallway using the manager as a shield while holding the gun on him. My son drew his Glock and fired the simlated round ending the simulation. The officers de briefed and explained how he should have tried to de- escalate etc and when asked why he did what he did he answered "I felt the hostage was in mortal danger, I had a clear shot so I took it." They then replayed the scenario on the screen and the shot John took was a center T shot on the bridge of the nose.... He turned to the officer in charge and said "I just saved the county a lot of money for trial and jail time..." The officer just shook his head and said.. Nice shot.

They also used the simuniton paint rounds in the Glocks for training. Paintball on steroids. Wear a couple of sweat shirts and some safety goggles and get ready to get shot at.

The group met at an old factory that was idle and took turns learning how to clear a building looking for an armed subject.

When it was John's turn to be the bad guy he isolated on of the searchers and started a fire fight with him. He took hard cover and waited while the other cadet excitedly pumped paint rounds into the steel column he was standing next to. When he hears the click of an empty gun, John stepped out and painted his goggles with one shot.

He reports to Quantico for the Marine OCS one month from today. (One year later than we had expected)

I think his mindset is more suited for Military engagement than a peace officer.

radar, is your sim interactive? I mean does the sim react to your voive comands? Ours does. Depending of how your voice commands are, the senerio could end peacefully or a shootout. Kinda neat.

Donut,
Like most things in the NZ Police they only bought half the package; lucky for us the more assertive, make a decision and shoot the mongrel part of the package. No realtime reactions from the bad guy for de-escalation as yet.
Its still desk mounted as they haven't finished the gallery for roof mounting the projector, I guess with it being a newer system they will have those packages once the funding fight we've got here at the moment is over.
Dawgdad : sounds like OCS is going to get at least one Marine who knows how and when to shoot.
We too have the paintball rounds and they're a lot of fun but like most things boys being boys we adopt the mentality to get as many rounds out and on target as quickly as possible to hurt? our mates - silly but true.
We also experimented with the laser system MILES? and that was really good for wider active-shooter type scenarios and getting everyone thinking about concealment and cover and why they are different.
Fun Times
Way better than standing 5 meters from a paper target with an Old .38 special like we used to do 15 to 20 years ago.
