Well...my old hunting partners lady has turned into an ANTI ...anti anything to do with killing animals. She has decided that she MUST take a stand against the upcoming legal duck hunt in Tasmania.

I have also been asked to attend the protest on opening day of duck shooting season on March 10 as well as be in the front line to rescue injured and dead ducks and other birds that fall prey to these ignorant murderers. I think this current battle will stand me in very good stead for my next foray into protecting ducks and other wild birds. |
I tried the friendly approach to tell her to be careful after the debacle last year in Victoria where one of the ANTIs broke the law and ventured into the field of fire and ended up with a gut load of shot for her troubles. All I got in return for my concerns was a diatribe of ANTI garbage.
Vince wrote: |
Be careful ********. The anti hunting activists in Victoria did everything they could to disrupt the legal hunt, including deliberately breaking the law. Also, the lady that was shot by the young fellow was breaking the law at the time it happened. This was a terrible thing for both parties involved, although I think the young shooter is the one who will bear the brunt of it knowing that he has shot someone, albeit accidentally. I don't have a problem with people choosing to oppose hunting, but not when they do things illegally. I fully support duck hunters being prosecuted who do the wrong thing...especially if they shoot protected birds. However, when they shoot legal birds and the activists rush in to try to "save" the birds then the activists are doing the wrong thing and are liable for prosecution for their actions. This can do a lot of damage to a person's reputation and standing in the community...and their employment. |
Mate's Missus wrote: |
Vince surely you know me well enough by now to know that nothing will stand in my way as I will always refuse to be silent about things that matter. These things matter and after quite a few brushes with the law already in similar circumstances relating to animal welfare, cruetly and current abhorrent practices, it has not ever stood in my way for employment, reputation and standing in the commumity. Anyhow who cares about my reputation but me! It is my reputation to be had not anyone elses. My standing in the community is also that...MY standing in the community. It is for no one else. People can judge as they will and they will see a person with passion, conviction, integrity, knowledge, justification, compassion, and the courage to stand up for what I truely believe in. How many people can die and say that about themselves? I believe in walking the walk and not just sprouting a few words about nothing. Break the law if I must...oh dear! |
Vince wrote: |
Let me know if you need bailing out mate. LOL
I know you don't let things stand in your way...you and I came from the same mould, we just have different outlooks. I am very passionate about some things myself, but I draw the line at breaking the law. I believe that the law is there for everyone, and although there are times I don't necessarily agree with it, the law is the law and is to be obeyed. I won't get into pros and cons of duck hunting...I don't do it myself, but I do know that the scientific community is agreeable to a hunting season this year because of the massive breeding that occurred...not sure about next year though.
I know that any amount of coercion from me will not make you ease off...I would just hate to see you get into trouble due to pressure from some of the ANTI nutbags that are out there. They will happily draw on others passion and put them in the front line and direct from behind. I know you are smarter than that, but they can be very persuasive with their arguments, many of which are not correct. |
Vince wrote: |
No *******...you are definitely not one of them...you have more commonsense and scruples than them. Every debate I have seen them get into they get "shot down", "blown out of the water" by scientific fact and commonsense. As I said right at the start mate....BE CAREFUL. |
Mate's Missus wrote: |
Well...very safe to say I WON that round. Bring it on I say! |
Vince wrote: |

Mate's Missus wrote: |
Oh no Vince, I am the winner believe you me! There was no friends involved in this either! |
Methinks I may have lost a friend because of her ANTI attitude. Oh well, nothing I can do about that I suppose. More than a little disappointing though. It's a dead set shame that the attitudes of the ANTIs have this sort of influence on the lives and attitudes of good people.
It will be interesting to see what my mate has to say about it all when next I speak to him.
Cheers, Vince

Wow, she sure has a hard line attitude against hunting. It will be interesting to hear what your hunting buddy says about this.

Vince, did you show her your "equipment" and asked what you had to do with it when not for duck-hunting?
Maybe she likes being shot and you didn't understand...

Wonder what deep seated anxiety is driving her. In my experience, when I see irrational attitudes about any "Cause" I expect to find it driven by unresolved personal insecurities and fears. Since the person is unable to resolve their own issues and perceived inadequacies they replace this resolution with taking up a cause that makes them feel better about themselves. The personal issues and the public cause don't even have to be related. Martyrs are not rational human beings but in their own minds they have risen above the rest of us to a higher level of morality, faith, loyalty etc. You can't speak rationally to an irrational person who already thinks feel you are a lesser human.
This is not to be confused with the sacrifices that people make for loved ones. There are true hero's out there.

Kinda seems to me that she's more interested in "MY standing in the community" than the birds. In other words, seeking attention. In my experience there are two types of anti-gun/hunting people.
There is a group that is reasonable but uninformed or misinformed. You can get them at least thinking about reality by presenting documented facts.
The other group is not reasonable and simply ignores all facts. Some of them are seeking attention, even negative, by LOUDLY proclaiming their "beliefs". Note that I say "beliefs", not "facts". Others are ignorant and prefer it that way. A few have suffered some tragedy that prejudiced them and they refuse to see anything other than their prejudice.
I approach all as if they are in the first group. If I find that they are in the second group I ignore them. Naturally they'll claim that they "won". Personally I've never considered learning the truth to be a contest.

Mac and Punkin, you both make good observations and like people who choose to become zealots for a cause, they are trying to hide the real issue in their lifes by redirecting it to another thing. Some truly believe that they are hiding their pain but they aren't.

In my time hunting, I have run across a few who are anti's, but I use the old saying
"What do you think is better:
a) An animal that lives free in the wild, mating, eating grass and breathing fresh air; then shot and killed/treated with respect both in-life and after death.
or
b) One that lives in a 6x6 cage for 90%-95% of their lives, hardly ever seeing sunlight, castrated or artificially inseminated with a machine (their babies soon taken away), fed foods they never wear meant to eat, and then having their life ended with a 100,000 electric volt to the head and a club or their throats slit with a knife?
Now which is more respectful to animals?"
Also Vince ask her if she believes in the Bible, if she does then tell her to see Genesis 9:3 and don't forget to check out if she wears anything made from an animal, like gloves, belt, shoes, anything leather, hide, wool, hair shampoo (animal fats) etc.

well mate thats a plurry shame. hopefully she will get over herself and see the light. one argument/point to get over is bullet vs poison because that my friend is the choice it WILL come down to. just look at what happens when a population gets out of control and starts eating crops. out comes the poisoned wheat and the suffering/lingering deaths not to mention the follow on effects on the rest of the food chain.
but then Im biased. Im a hunter. always have been always will be.

You all make very valid and interesting points.
I haven't known her long enough to know if there is anything in her past that she is trying to escape.
As long as I have known her she is a dedicated vegetarian...not sure about going as "hardcore" as vegan.
She is a very intelligent lady...a qualified Psychologist...a High School teacher and definitely has the respect of her professional peers.
This "spurt" of ANTI behaviour certainly has me confused as to where it has come from.
I think what has happened is she has got involved with a group of animal lovers (nothing wrong with that or them) and through them has come into contact with the extremist fringe group ANTIs and they have corrupted her thinking.
Oh well...it is her call if she chooses to throw the friendship away. I'm really looking forward to what my mate has to say about it all though.
Cheers, Vince

just be wary mate, your buddy may be avoiding you to avoid confrontation, he too may be hoping it will all just go away.I too know people with very different views to mine and you just have to agree to disagree and avoid all mention of the contreversial topic for the good of the friendship.
