If only that were a story about Australia!!!
+1 for handguns for self-defence.
Btw, did you know that in Australia, we aren't allowed to have pepper-spray for self-defence!

I disagree with the knife issue. As long as you have a genuine reason for having it, you can have one.
The catch is, genuine reasons are very hard to come up with that allow you to carry one on the streets.
Not been tested yet, but I'll use the fact I'm a volunteer fire fighter on call and need my Leatherman multi-tool for rescuing and saving people.
It's about the only reason I think I could get away with.
Remember the article in the papers about the girl who got done with a Stanley safety knife she used for cutting open boxes at the supermarket where she worked. She was on the train ride home from work and was told she should have left the knife at work.

In Canada pepper spray is illegal as are tasers.
Knives are okay as long as they are not concealed technically. Our Criminal law makes it illegal to hide say a fixed blade knife in your pocket. You can run around carrying a fixed bladed knife in most of Canada (save for a few of the big cities where you'd get harassed due to by-laws but its not a criminal offense per say) as long as its on your belt.
Swiss Army Knives and Leathermans are "tools" not knives per say, so they are legally okay in your pocket.

Pepper spray isn't illegal in Canada - it comes in the form of dog repellant and bear repellant. Bear repellant is the same strength as what the Police carry.
What is illegal is the use of it against a human.

Its legal status is defined strictly as a prohibited weapon. The regulations clarifying that only when sold and carried for use against a human is illegal beyond the prohibited status never actually went into force.
So while the police are turning a blind eye to bear and dog sprays, technically there is a fine line that is not even there between the different naming conventions.
