I would like to show you some pictures taken on ANTICOSTI ISLAND in Québec.

This island was purchased in 1895 by Henri Menier a rich chocolate manufacturer who made it his hunting and fishing territory. It measures about 222 km by 16 to 45 km wide. The climate is mild since it is surrounded by water from the St-Lawrence River. Menier introduced the species that he wanted to hunt such as white tail deer, foxes and partridges but no bears nor wolves. The result was that the deer population exploded (no predators except Menier and his hunting friends).
Today the Anticosti deer are smaller than the ones on the main land, they become fertile only at 3 1/2 years old ( 1 ½ years on the main land) they do not reproduce well (only 0.9 per females compared to 2 or 3 per females on the main land.) All this because of the scarcity of food. They eat every bit of vegetation that they can reach and of course the lack of predators to cull the herd.
I edited because I forgot one important fact... They live longer than the main land deer, 20 years is the average life span of the island deer.
The human population of the island is 300 souls and the deer population is estimated at 120 000.

Have a pleasant show….
