A hunter on another board is going pronghorn hunting and has a .308 Win rifle. What bullet/ load do you western guys use on the speedy goats? I am pretty sure a 165gr load is overkill...

There is no such thing as overkill. The bullet to use is the one that gives the best accuracy in a particular rifle and, for a 308 Winchester, I've had the best success with a 168 gr. bullet.

By the way, the 4 pronghorns I took were with a 300 Weatherby Magnum shooting 168 gr. Berger VLDs. As I said, no such thing as overkill.

Dawgdad the size of the bullet/projectile is not realy the issue from what Ive seen. the ability to hit the plurry thing is more relevant. we have chammy over here (a mountain dweling goaty wee beasty very tasty) they arent any bigger than your average labrador but get shot with all manner of calibres as the ability to reach out to connect is of more importance than how much gun you use within reason any thing from .222 upwards is enough gun but most guys would be using .308 .270 7mm mag etc etc not too much gun just what you are carrying at the time.

Like the other men, I suggest using the bullet your rifle shoots best, and a .308 Win with 165 can take a 300 yd pronghorn-if you can hold steady enough. so, enjoy the hunt and know that you already have what you need to do the job properly. Very Happy

I have killed several Javelina with the 30.06 and 180 gr Barnes X bullets and had no more meat damage than others uisng a .223 or .243.
