Our native pheasant population is quite small and if you want to hunt these birds, it usally requires stocking these birds. The Penneylvania Game Commission does stock pheasants. However, that is early in the season and the numbers put out have been reduced in recent years.

I make several trips a year to a regulated shotting ground that puts out as many pheasdants as you want to hunt. The birds are put out the night before and the hunts are usually conducted with English Springer Spaniels. The birds, dogs and farms we hunt are superb. Local hawks, coyotes and foxes do take a toll on the birds and they are wary. If you want to hunt pheasants today, this is about the only route available for a quality hunt. Anyone else hunt regulated shooting grounds? Take care...

For some reason, I just saw your post now Joe.
I hate it when a guy gets 0 on responses.
The times that I pheasant hunt, I like to go to reserves.
I don't have to walk all day to maybe get two birds, and I save money by not using so much gas to get a decent farm.
I also ALWAYS have a great time hunting at a pheasant reserve.

Eric

I like pheasant hunting on shooting preserves. I grew up hunting ND pheasants and when someone asks me if it's like hunting wild birds I tell them it's sort of like opening weekend. Most of the farms I have hunted tend to have a lot of hunters that use pointing dogs. I go out Sunday afternoon when everybody else is watching football games. I ask the owner to put me someplace that was hunted with pointers in the morning. Then Rusty my springer and I go find all the birds they missed.

I know there are farms that are poorly run and treat the birds badly. That makes for a poor hunting experience but I have always found the operators to be top notch. The only problem I have is that when I do hunt wild birds, Rusty gives me this sort of disgruntled look when I don't shoot the hens. It's almost as bad as the "look" I get when I miss.

We had a regulated hunting area here on Maui, as far as I know it has closed down now because the person that was running it moved to another Island. This was the best place to train a new dog because there was a lot of game there, the birds were released all thru the season there and you would meet fresh releases as well as "wild" birds that would give you a run for the money. It would cost you $185.00 for a half day hunt with a point system. You were allowed 10 points. Pheasants (cock or hen) = 3 points, Chukar = 1 point. You could shoot any combination as long as you didn't pass 10 points. I trained my English Pointer there and he was the most awesome bird dog I ever had! He passed 2 years ago and I am planning to get another pup but I don't know where I can train my new pup when I get him. You are very lucky to have such a place to go to if you desire. Good Hunting!

In the SE we really do not have wild phesants, but most preserves or reserves have phesants of some sort. Quail is another bird that you see a lot of as pen raised birds. I would imagine that the field type birds will get harder and harder to find in the wild as the habitat gets gobbled up by development.

It is a good day out, as long as you expect pen raised birds and do not get to aggrivated when they act like pen raised birds or "chickens" as my bird hunting buddy calls them. Very Happy
Best,
Ed
