My daughter's laptop crashed recently, also running Vista, also some sort of corrupted configuration. I was able to start it in "safe mode" and back up her files. I'm trying talk her into upgrading to Windows 7.

At home my Vista works fine, but at work it gives me the blue screen of death at least three times a week. Even the smart guy techs can't figure it out. Starting to think about up grading soon.

Vince if you disconnected the drive without dismounting it first it can lose its letter and not be accessible. There is a way to re-assign a drive letter to it but the danger is that you can lose what you have on it.
Same thing happened on our drive but we were lucky and didn't lose the data. Now we just shut the computer down before we disconnect it.

Vince- I was talking about your external drive - not the internal one...

I'm assuming you guys are aware of the "safely remove" feature ???

I am well aware of the safely remove - and the message that follows too - "drive is in use- it cannot be removed at this time" That is when (after you are sure that everything has been saved) you shut the computer down and then unplug the darn thing. When you go through shut down it resets to no longer in use until you turn it back on. The Geek at the computer store told me to do that when we got the still in use message.
Windoze doesn't care that you haven't done anything with the drive for an hour and all the programs that you can see on your desktop are closed - it just knows that it was in use and is stll connected.
THANK YOU BILL GATES!
