A friend nicked his Chrony with a .45 Colt once. We were able to get it working again and I started using a card or some tape to make sure I didn't shoot mine. The key is to place the card/tape high enough so that even if your sights are right at the top edge of it there is enough space for the bullet to pass over the chronograph.

I've had this chronograph for at least 25 year. It has served me well. I nicked it with a .380 last year when working up loads for my wife's carry pistol. It still works. Lucky me.

Here is a picture of my set-up. Never going back to an optical chrono.

From your last post here, I assume you are more than happy with it?
I'm now in the market for one (unexpected bonus from work ) and am curious what your current opinion on it is? Does it reliably pick up shots? Easy (enough) to setup? What about battery life?
Also, what is your preferred mounting option? Tripod or the bench mount?
Thanks.

Azar, I have not used my ProChrono since I've gotten the LabRadar. I'm very please and am amazed with its accuracy - 10x more precise the optical. I also can check/derive BC which has been insightful. Without a muzzle brake, the muzzle must not be ahead of the device - even with my .270. I have not brake on my 300 BO and it must be behind the unit to be picked up. I don't have a microphone to pick-up 22 LR and haven't tried enough to pick them up on dopper only (no muzzle blast). Also, I wasn't surprised when it would pick-up rounds fired with my silencer. No big deal - I only am interested in accuracy with my 22 LR and I can shoot a couple rounds with the can off if I need velocity measurements. Or I'll figure out these two later.

It has been very reliable picking up shots. When it has missed its been my error. E.g., I forgot to turn it on, It timed out/auto-off and I to reset. Or sometimes dropping the BCG will trigger it and it must be cleared or it picked up another shot on the mz blast on the range but didn't pick up a bullet so much be cleared (has happened twice). I am now in the habit of hitting a down arrow before each shot to make sure I see the Velocity display ready for the next round.
As shown, I bought a USB battery from BestBuy for $30 and it last a long-long time. Only recharged it once and then it still had 2 out of 4 bars. I have never put AA batteries in it.

Oops, missed one. I would not use a tripod if shooting off the bench. You want the unit within easy reach and you don't want a gust of wind to blow it over. I really like the platform I built for it. It sets up in seconds and makes it easy to set-up the rifles for the right distance. I added an extension but should have made it 36" long so the rear bag was on the platform. With the muzzle having to be at or behind the unit, I push it out ahead of the bench - as much as 6" (further than shown above)
Make sure you have your manual with you (I have mine on the laptop). It's easy to use but I have had to refer to it for some of the not so often used features.

Well,
I finally ordered mine. The shipping status shows "Out for delivery" so it looks like it's arriving today! I appreciate the feedback.

Great Azar. Remember to take a copy of the operating manual with you. I keep forgetting the key combination to start a new string. I'm getting used to just shooting all my rifles in one string and logging the shot number when I change a load or rifle. Keep that muzzle back even, not out in front of the device. Cheers!

Slim,
I went to their website and downloaded the PDF version of their manual. Then I loaded it onto my phone so I should always have a copy with me. I'll keep the paper manual at home for backup.
I had to spend 9+ hours driving on Saturday to go pick up my antelope meat and then head back home so I wasn't able to give it a spin last week. And I just found out my wife has tickets to a show this Saturday morning and afternoon. So it looks like I'm still going to have to wait...
Ah well, that's life.
